We ordered three appetizers, eight pieces of nigiri, and the chicken udon.
We arrived at 5:30 p.m. They open at 5 p.m., and we were the first customers there. The place is definitely more of a hole-in-the-wall and appears to be family-run. I have nothing against hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but the restaurant was empty and extremely quiet. There was no music playing, so it was complete silence until another couple came in. Even then, I’m not a fan of restaurants that don’t play some kind of background music—the silence made the place feel even more lifeless.
Onto the food:
The grilled sea bass was good.
The seaweed cucumber salad was so-so. The mackerel that came with it tasted fishy, which could have been due to it being cured, but I just wasn’t a fan.
We also ordered the fried tofu, but it didn’t come out until near the end of our meal. I’m not sure why it took so long, especially since the kitchen wasn’t busy.
I enjoyed the scallops and kani (crab). They were sweet, and the scallops had a good texture. The hamachi was my second favorite. Unfortunately, the madai and salmon didn’t taste fresh. The toro was probably the worst piece of toro I’ve ever had—it was extremely fishy in both taste and smell. I’ve never had toro like that before. The unagi also had a slight sour taste.
The stir-fried chicken udon was good.
I was also confused by the order in which the food came out—it felt very disorganized. To make matters worse, my boyfriend has been experiencing stomach issues since last night’s dinner and is still recovering.
Overall, the cooked dishes were pretty good and decent. However, when it comes to the raw items, it may be safer to order more commonly requested dishes, as they’re more likely to be made with fresher fish.
I made a reservation attempting to get omokase, but was told the counter was booked. We got there early (5pm) reservations and walked into an empty restaurant. We were asked if we had a reservation then seated at a table immediately.
We ordered appetizers, a bunch of different nigiri, and an udon dish. The order of the food was a bit strange. About ¾ of the nigiri arrived first, then some of the appetizers, then more appetizers, the rest of the nigiri, then the udon.
Some of the fish with the nigiri tasted off, and I’m guessing that’s what did it to me. I didn’t get a pitcure of the first plate of nigiri.
The udon seemed like it was ½ a pack of udon. It was a pretty small serving. It did taste good, though.
The tempura was ok – I say this mostly because I found an ant walked on the inside of the black dish.
Everything was pretty slow. The whole meal took almost 2 hours. It looks like cooked food came from downstairs, and sushi was cut at the sushi bar. Two other tables for a total of 3 other people got seated while we were there, so I’m not sure why it took so long to get food.
Initially, it was really quiet. There are wall mounted speakers, but no music was playing. What did break the silence was a couple who started watching videos on a phone with the volume up really high.
About 10 minutes after leaving, I got violently ill. While driving home, I had to stop and find a place to use a restroom.
Cleanliness may be a huge, much needed thing here. Because I got sick, I cannot recommend this place at all.
This is a SF local secret. Try to get a bar seat for omakase. He feeds you till your full. The atmosphere screams locals only. Leave your attitude outside and let Roger guide you through an amazing meal. There is rumor he might retire in a couple years.
This is one of my favorite places for sushi.
Ask for the sushi bar seats – you will not regret it! It is your very own omasake experience, but better because in addition to really good sushi, you get to enjoy Roger’s company. Highly recommend the aged tuna, Norwegian mackerel, and Wagyu nigiri! Also, make sure to leave some room for their in-house ice cream and desserts!
