I had the waakye, the flavors were rich and deeply satisfying like something straight out of a Ghanaian home kitchen. You can tell the food was made with love and tradition.
The service was just as impressive. Our waiter “Olowodollar” was super attentive and made sure we had everything we needed without ever hovering. It’s rare to find that kind of genuine hospitality these days.
If you’ve been craving West African cuisine or just want to try something incredibly flavorful, Zongo is the place. Next time I visit Houston, I’ll definitely stop by.
The Bad: The service was not great. I would recommend calling the food in for pick up and expect an hour wait or more. We went in to eat and had at least an hour and half wait time. We were also disappointed that they ran out of jollof rice. Also noticed that some of the tables were not as clean as they should have been.
The Good: The food is good. It was fresh and I did enjoy the taste of it. My wife likes their stew and shrimp suya. I like the steak suya and their cabbage.
I would probably come back just to try to jollof rice since we didn’t get a chance.
Upon arrival, our waiter was decent—definitely seemed a bit inexperienced, but we understood that and didn’t let it take away from our anticipation. The food did take some time to arrive, but we were still so eager to try it that we passed the time watching videos and soaking in the atmosphere.
Unfortunately, our first order of samosas arrived completely burnt—no way around that—but we remained optimistic, hoping the main courses would make up for it. After about 35 minutes, our meals arrived, and I will say that the presentation was quite lovely, which we truly appreciated.
We ordered two dishes: Jollof rice and Waakye. The jollof, sadly, was very dry, lacking the depth of flavor that makes it so beloved, and it even seemed like we were served the bottom-of-the-pan portion. The plantains were excellent, but the meat on the stick was cold and tough to chew. The waakye had similar issues—the fish was fried to the point of being nearly inedible, the pepper sauce had a burnt taste, the rice was dry and bland, and the egg was simply boiled with no additional flavor or sauce, even on the spaghetti.
I don’t leave reviews often, as I truly sympathize with the challenges of running a restaurant, but I sincerely want this place to succeed. After our visit, I came across several similar reviews and wished I had read them beforehand. That said, I genuinely hope ownership takes this feedback to heart, as this could be an incredible space with the right refinements. The passion and potential are there—it just needs the execution to match. Wishing them all the best and hoping for great things in the future!
