The first things I noticed when I walked in the door at 6PM on a Sunday we’re that the place was dark and empty except for one table. Curtains were drawn across what would have been a sunny and pleasant view of the street. I waited at the front for a moment and then sought out some help, which I found in a gentleman alone in the back bar in a dark corner. He told me to sit anywhere.
As soon as I sat I became aware of two unpleasant things: a smell of rank sewage in the air and flies landing on me 2 at a time. I seriously considered leaving, but I had a meeting in an hour and this was my only chance to eat.
After 10 minutes of waiting I sought out the man in the bar again and placed my order. I ordered the tilapia and a bowl of tortilla soup.
A moment later I was brought some very sorry looking chips and salsa. The salsa was watery and nearly devoid of flavor, and provided no help to the stale, flavorless chips.
20 minutes later myself and the other table were brought complimentary cheese stuffed tortillas. I’m not sure if this is included with all meals or if it was being offered as some kind of general apology for the smell.
Next, I received my tortilla soup. It consisted of rice (the same stuff you get as a side with dinner), a few cheese cubes, and flavorless broth with cut up fried tortillas (the same kind your tacos are wrapped in) soaking in it. That’s it. It reminded me of something I would have scrounged together as a starving college student back in the day, like a condiment soup. It’s price on the menu is $8.
Finally, I received the main course. I was surprised and pleased at the portion size. The rice and beans were fine. One of the two fish fillets tasted strongly of bleach, so I didn’t eat it. The other tasted fine and was thankfully enough to fill me up. The veggies were ok.
The waiter was very attentive during the later half of the meal, which was nice. He took the soup off the bill, but since I ate one of the fillets I paid for the fish, which is to be expected. I do recognize that they are trying here, which is good, but I feel a duty to my fellow consumers to alert them to the possibility of an experience like mine. If I had known what was in store for me, I would have steered clear. The flies, the stench, the mediocre food… There are probably (hopefully) better options in town.
We started off with complimentary warm chips and salsa – never a bad thing. We were also given a small cheese quesadilla each. I don’t know if that’s the norm but it was a pleasant surprise.
The food was amazing. Coming from LA, I’ve eaten my fair share of Mexican food and this place did not disappoint. The refried beans were creamy and cheesy and flavorful. The rice was perfectly cooked. The enchiladas were drowned in sauce and cheese. I mean, you really can’t go wrong! I usually am not a big enchiladas fan but the pictures convinced me to get it and I’m so glad I did.
BF liked his food too. He said he’d come back.
Not only was the food delicious but the service was impeccable!
There’s a lone server who took care of our every needs from beginning to end. He was very friendly and attentive. Good service just added to our great experience here.
