A gathering with project colleagues. The cooking method was fairly authentic, but the spiciness was only at the Cantonese level.

Fish Fillet with Hot Chili Sauce水煮魚片: As expected of their signature dish! The basa fish fillets were incredibly tender, the Sichuan peppercorns were fragrant but not numbing, and the overall flavor was oily but not greasy. The server would remove the chilies after serving, so there was no need to worry about the spiciness.

Beef Fillets & Cabbage with Hot Chili Sauce水煮牛肉: Redder and spicier than the boiled fish. The Sichuan people present commented that this was the only dish with flavor. The beef was very tender; although you could taste the tenderizing powder, it wasn’t a big problem. Scallions and Szechuan peppercorns contributed much to the fragrance.

Pork Intestine with Preserved Vegetable酸菜大腸: Surprisingly, it tasted like… Hakka cuisine? The pork intestines were cut on the thicker side, not the usual kind, but the slightly sour and spicy flavor with a light thickening was just right.

Spicy Frog in Fried Pot乾鍋牛蛙: Despite the name, there was a lot of sauce; the bullfrog meat was too tough and chewy. Not recommended.

Ma Po Tofu (With minced pork)麻婆豆腐: Very delicious! The tofu was very tender, and the Sichuan peppercorns were very fragrant.

Duck with Peking Plum Sauce京醬鴨片: The duck was mushy and lacked texture, and the Beijing plum sauce was heavily diluted. I had a feeling of not knowing what I had eaten.

Sichuan Spicy Dumpling紅油水餃: I loved them!! The dumplings were large, the filling was generous, and the skin was on the thicker side, giving them a good chewy and firm texture. Besides the chili oil and peanuts, there was a hint of vinegar, which was very refreshing.

Steamed Juicy Pork Bun小籠包: The restaurant claims they are handmade daily. Plenty of soup filling, but slightly oily; the skin was chewy but not dry, unfortunately one was broken. If this isn’t the case for most places, then Fuchun Ju excels in its fillings, while Zoe’s excels in its skins; both are comparable and worth trying.

Visited with two friends and ordered a variety of dishes, from Dan Dan noodles, scallion pancakes, pork dumplings, Kung pao chicken, and spicy lamb. Everything was absolutely delicious. All the dishes were cooked to perfection and with great care. Service was very attentive and helpful as well. Highly recommended.

UPDATE: I have been here two times after my first review and everything still stands. Food and service is amazing, highly recommend.

Came here on Christmas night and boy was I impressed! I went with my girlfriend and we loved it. As you can imagine the place was poppin and take out orders were flying out the door. The staff handled the high traffic with ease. The inside was simple and clean and the food was yummy. We got amazing scallion pancakes, sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, and chicken fried rice. Great food and great service! Yummy local spot for anyone living in the Somerville area!

We were on our way back to our hotel from Porter Square and decided to eat before going inside for the evening. We found Zoe’s on Google and it felt like such a gift. It’s in a mostly residential area; however we did find parking after circling. I wasn’t familiar with the area (in the dark) and I was hungry 🙂 so there may have been easier options.
The food was absolutely scrumptious, fresh tasting and abundant. The spinach was so good, I ate the leftover with my breakfast the next day.
Everything we ordered was tasty.
The customer care was top tier. We felt extra special. I definitely highly recommend and intend to revisit. Thanks so much.

An unexpected Chinese food haven beyond Chinatown.

In search of an authentic Chinese dining experience that sidesteps the usual hustle and bustle of Boston’s Chinatown, my friends and I recently took a visit to Zoe’s on a Friday evening. The place was buzzing—a generally promising sign — and we were able to find a table without a wait. Despite the lively atmosphere, the service was impressively swift and attentive. The prices, slightly more affordable than those in Chinatown, were an added bonus.

We shared an array of entrees, starting with the Dry Diced Chicken. Encased in a crispy exterior, the fatty bits of chicken thigh brought a level of richness that made the dish enjoyable. House Special Fried Rice was a multi-protein extravaganza that featured shrimp, chicken, and pork. It was more buttery than typical fried rice dishes but oddly satisfying. As our meal progressed, we found the Shanghai Baby Bok Choy Toy to be a bit on the salty side. However, its lightness offered a much-needed palate cleanser, setting the stage for the heartier dishes that followed.

Mao’s Home Style Pork lived up to its name by providing a comforting, homely flavor that perfectly rounded out the previous courses. However, the pinnacle of our meal had to be the Tea-Smoked Duck. Though it was seemingly dry, the meat inside was incredibly tender and juicy. Each bite confirmed that this was quite possibly one of the best duck dishes I’ve had in Boston, or anywhere else for that matter.

Overall, our dinner at Zoe’s exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely come back to try the duck again and explore other popular dishes.

I get takeout from Zoe’s pretty regularly and dine in there occasionally. It’s become one of my favorite Chinese restaurants around (and I’ve tried many!). The food is consistently excellent- fresh, with high-quality ingredients. Favorites include beef with black mushroom and water chestnuts, salt and pepper shrimp, and stir-fried spinach with garlic. There’s also a good selection of authentic Sichuan and Hunan dishes.

We had a pleasant dinner here. We ordered egg drop soup, Teriyaki beef, sweet and sour chicken, vegetable delight, vegetable fried rice, and duck in plum sauce. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was nice. The service was a bit hectic though.

Excellent albeit expensive Chinese take away here. We all enjoyed our food and agreed that this is a higher end feel for sure. If you’re looking for cheap greasy Chinese food, this is not the place for you. Delivery was fast; this is a great spot and we will be ordering from here again soon.

DO NOT order their lunch specials online. Each lunch special should come with two sides (choice of rice, soup, and appetizer) but they only gave me one full lunch special (with rice and soup) and another without sides when I specifically ordered two lunch specials. I can’t believe they are so cheap that they would scam you on white rice and soup… Terrible businesspeople!
