Walked in and the music was straight-up inappropriate and off-putting. Not the vibe you expect from a deli where people are trying to grab food. Turned me right off and I won’t be coming back. Food spots should feel welcoming — this didn’t. ♂️
The biggest surprise was the vegan choc chip cookies, omg. They’re amazing, & the sea salt just takes it over the top. Please do not forget them when you stop in!
Zio’s Deli, a cozy spot nestled on Elmwood Avenue, is more than just a sandwich shop; it’s an experience for the senses. With a varied menu, friendly atmosphere, and a story of evolving bread choices, Zio’s stands out in the local culinary scene.
Ambiance and Service: Zio’s greets you with a warm, inviting ambiance. The deli has a casual, yet lively atmosphere, making it an ideal place for a quick lunch or a leisurely afternoon bite. The staff at Zio’s are notably friendly and passionate about their craft, adding to the overall welcoming experience.
Bread Journey: Initially, Zio’s used baguettes for their sandwiches. These baguettes, while fresh, were unfortunately quite dry, affecting the overall enjoyment of their otherwise delicious sandwiches. Recognizing this, Zio’s switched to a softer bread from a new supplier, which was an improvement, though there have been occasional issues with freshness.
Menu Highlights: Zio’s menu is a testament to their commitment to quality and variety. Alongside classic sandwiches, they offer a range of creative options. They have a delightful selection of meats, including traditional choices like turkey and ham, and more gourmet options like prosciutto and capicola. The cheese selections are equally impressive, featuring classics like Swiss and cheddar, alongside artisan options like gouda and brie. Vegetarian options are also plentiful, with fresh, locally-sourced vegetables playing a starring role.
Specialties: Their panini selection deserves a special mention. When pressed, the sandwiches gain a crispy texture and a harmonious blend of flavors, making them a must-try.
Beverages and Sides: Zio’s also offers a variety of sides, including homemade chips and fresh salads. Their beverage selection includes artisanal sodas, local craft beers, and a range of coffees and teas.
Hours and Accessibility: Zio’s is open from 10 AM to 7 PM on weekdays, and 11 AM to 5 PM on weekends, catering to both the lunch crowd and early dinner-goers. The deli is easily accessible, located in a bustling area with ample parking.
Final Thoughts: While Zio’s Deli has had its ups and downs with bread selection, the quality of their ingredients, the variety in their menu, and their commitment to customer satisfaction make it a standout establishment. The staff’s enthusiasm and the deli’s welcoming vibe make each visit a pleasure. I remain optimistic that Zio’s will continue to refine their bread choices. Until then, their warm, pressed sandwiches are a perfect way to enjoy the full range of flavors Zio’s has to offer.
