Service and Atmosphere obviously didn’t hit 5-stars, but that’s to be expected in a pedestrian commuter underground.
The freshness and quality of the ingredients are first rate.
The price was very reasonable. I expected “expensive real-estate” pricing, but the food was the same as at my local supermarket, but ten times as good!
We started with the Salmon Lover Combo, which was a dream for anyone who can’t get enough of this classic fish. Each slice was fresh, buttery, and cut to perfection, with that silky texture that makes salmon so addictive. The Torch Combo took things in another direction: lightly flamed sushi that added a gentle smokiness and warmth, transforming the fish into something richer and more complex without losing its delicacy.
On the side, the Seaweed Salad was crisp, tangy, and refreshing, with just the right hint of sesame to balance the flavours. The Miso Soup was classic comfort: warm, savoury, and soul-soothing, the kind of simple dish that sets the tone for the rest of the meal. Pairing it all with a bottle of Oi Ocha Bold Green Tea kept things light and refreshing, cleansing the palate between bites while adding that earthy depth only bold green tea brings.
For dessert, the Red Bean Mochi was soft, chewy, and lightly sweet, the perfect way to finish. It felt playful and traditional at once, rounding out the meal in a way that left us fully satisfied but never heavy.
What stood out most at Zen Kyoto was the balance: quick service that didn’t cut corners, flavours that felt both classic and elevated, and a menu that covers everything from sushi indulgence to ramen comfort. In a bustling downtown core where fast often means forgettable, Zen Kyoto proves you can have efficiency and excellence.

Their location at Bay-Adelaide Centre has a few different items available for order online, such as Katsu Don and Tonkatsu Don. Both came with a helping of fried pork or chicken cutlet with egg on rice. The portion was a reasonable size and the meal came with a side of miso soup.
Overall, it’s a good lunch option but is also a bit pricey compared to other options in the PATH. Recommended to order online in advance to skip the usual lineup.
Their menu offers standard items from cash & carry maki rolls to ramen and donburi. We ordered the Chirashi Don and also got complimentary miso soup. Their miso soup seems to be made with slices of fish cake and possibly winter melon. The Chirashi Don features a mix of sweet shrimp, tuna, salmon, egg, octopus, white tuna, salmon roe, bonito flakes, and shiitake mushrooms on a bed of sushi rice. Their cash and carry section offers a variety of standard rolls, torch sushi, and maki roll combinations.
Despite being relatively new, Zen Kyoto operates very efficiently, however, it was extremely busy due to its location in the PATH. The unit is well-organized, with separate cashier sections for the cash & carry and the ramen & donburi orders. They provide paper bags for to-go orders, with differentiating colours for ramen and sushi/donburi. There’s no dine-in section as it shares a food court. Service was excellent and the turnover was fast.
