Frankenmuth, MI is a Bavarian-themed town similar to Helen, GA. This was our first visit to Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and it definitely won’t be the last! On this snowy day in January, we were warmly welcomed by greeters at the hostess stand, as well as the crackling fire in the waiting area. This family-style restaurant offers a wide selection of delicious entrees on its expansive menu (see photos). Gluten-free options are plentiful and easy to find on their menu. Choices range from fresh fish, to lamb, to beef, and rotisserie chicken! The majority of their delicious appetizers are also gluten-free AND all you can eat. Fresh, delicious, soft, warm gluten free rolls are also available. We chose to share the Rotisserie Half Chicken that came with a sautéed blend of potatoes, green beans, broccoli, and carrots on the side (these were delicious as well). We also have to give a shout-out to our awesome server, Carla, for being so gracious and attentive to our every need. You can see her Bavarian attire in the pic, which is also worn by all the servers. The multiple dining rooms are all decorated in European elegance, but the customer dress-code is very relaxed and the atmosphere has a comforting feel. We highly recommend visiting Zehnders if you’re ever in the Frankenmuth, Michigan area!

My family and I have been coming here for many years and not just because they are America’s Largest Family Restaurant but really because their food is absolutely DELICIOUS! The Chicken here is famous with good reason! The Stuffing and Sweet Potatoes, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy are equally out if this world! YUM! The staff is always super helpful and highly sweet and friendly! The lower level features very cool areas too like a Cafeteria, Bakery, Gift Shop, Bathrooms, Elevators and much more! They also have on the Lower Level things like Cakes, Brownies, Their Famous Family Style Chicken, Clothing, Jewelry, Souvenirs, Gifts; There’s something for everyone!

This place was a real treat for my wife and I coming from Tennessee. In Tennessee, we are also known for good fried chicken and this place had some great tasting, flavorful, and cooked just right fried chicken. The atmosphere was all Christmas-like and decorated to the till! This was originally built in 1856 and rebuilt in 1957, based on a sign we saw inside. The wait staff is dressed in costumes from 1856 and the restaurant truly keeps to its roots in decor, food, service, and dress.

My wife and I did not go with the full family style meal, but this is the most popular, especially on the weekend where they add prime rib to the entree selections. We split a 3-piece fried chicken meal, which, to start, came with cabbage coleslaw, white bread, fruit bread, whipped butter, and raspberry spread. The meal itself comes with mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy. We added the sauteed squash and butter noodles on the side. The entire meal was the perfect amount for two and it was delicious.

Kate was our server and she was a real delight for us while dining. She was courteous, friendly, warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, attentive, responsive, gave great suggestions, and even let us know we could eat off of the lunch menu (which we didn’t even know existed).

We even got to take a picture with Zehnder the Chicken!

It was great overall experience and if you are ever in Frankenmuth, MI, make sure to stop by Zehnder’s for some great food, service, and overall dining experience!

Zehnder’s never disappoints! We enjoyed the classic fried chicken family-style dinner, and it was absolutely outstanding. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. Every side dish was delicious and plentiful, making it a true comfort-food experience. The service was warm and attentive, and the atmosphere felt welcoming and timeless. A must-visit for anyone looking for an iconic, memorable meal.

An extremely popular spot — and for a reason. The famous chicken really is delicious, and the inside of this place is surprisingly pretty, grand, and fancy. Our server, Steph, was excellent and accommodated us very well. We truly appreciated her.

That being said… other than the chicken, the food kinda let us down this visit. I used to come here all the time growing up and I remember the food quality being a lot better.

My wife ordered the Portobello Ravioli, and it honestly tasted like it had been sitting under the heat lamp too long. The pasta was doughy and undercooked, didn’t taste right, and the bread was super hard and stale. Thankfully, Steph took care of it and brought out a new one — and it was WAY better, almost like a completely different dish.

I ordered the half chicken dinner. The chicken was fantastic, and the broccoli was great — but they forgot the potatoes. They eventually brought some out, but for what we pay at a place like this, the potatoes were a major disappointment. Super bland, no flavour, and honestly tasted like cheap frozen home fries. For the price, I would’ve much preferred mashed or roasted potatoes instead of something that felt like an afterthought.

Definitely worth trying for the chicken alone, but overall, we just weren’t blown away this visit.

Probably the first question one gets when planning a visit to Frankenmuth; Bavarian Inn or Zehnder’s? That’s because both are the big draw in terms of the restaurants in the area and both have their fried chicken as their claim to fame outside of their history.
Well…if you want a lunch that features fried chicken but you don’t want the all-you-can-eat experience, come to Zehnder’s.
Zehnder’s is of course across the street from Bavarian Inn right by the Holzbruke over the Cass River and it’s hard to miss. The building and restaurant is well kept and has the appearance of an old tavern or roadside inn, especially on the inside. I love the more formal table setting in this restaurant as well as how attentive the wait staff are. The server assigned to my area answered my questions and did well in keeping my table serviced.
Their menu is a mix of German fare, American dining cuisine and of course their fried chicken (with their special seasoning blend). Tableside, they serve a couple different breads; white bread and stollen. The stollen was very good; not overly sweet but has a good fruity taste. The big winner is the raspberry preserve they serve with the bread; it’s that delicious.
Also, they have their own house beer (brewed by Wolverine Brewing), of which I had their red ale which I enjoyed and the price for a pint was rather decent. Sadly the only way to get it to go is by growler…and I came from too far to fill a growlers.
As mentioned, I had their lunch fried chicken dinner (3 pieces), which is served with mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, and slaw. It is also served with a noodle soup, which while light, works well as a first course. The fried chicken was nice and crispy and I did enjoy the seasoning used (fun tip: if you’re nostalgic for the original version of the seasoning with MSG, they sell that in their shops downstairs). Only critique is the chicken pieces are little smaller than I expected; however, if these are from sustainable farming, I can understand that. The mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy were also very good though the standout was the slaw. The slaw reminded me of the slaw my grandmother used to make (being of Germanic decent, might make sense); very creamy and refreshing. Definitely something I would have wanted more of had I had a cooler to take a quart to go.
While I didn’t sit in the bar, the bar area also looked very nice and felt as close to an old tavern as you can get.
While I cannot say which of the two big places is better, Zehnder’s is definitely a great place to eat in Frankenmuth.

We arrived around 11:00 AM without a reservation and had to wait while guests with reservations were seated first. Even so, we were seated within about ten minutes, which was great. I would definitely recommend making a reservation, though—by lunchtime the place was getting very busy.

The staff were very helpful, especially when explaining ingredients since I’m lactose intolerant. Our waitress was fantastic the entire time, quickly checking in, refilling drinks, and bringing out our food. I ordered the sausage meal, and it was excellent. Definitely recommend!

Quick and friendly service, great food – moist chicken and mashed potatoes, gravy was tasty and plentiful, sausages were equally tasty with nicely tangy sauerkraut.
Seasonal spiced cider a nice touch – avail and spiked or non-alcoholic.
Great meal for a good price in a relaxing environment.
