Sandra & her daughter were PHENOMENAL from the time we walked through the door until the moment we walked out!!!!!
I traveled to Cleveland,OH from Dallas, TX on 12-5th, wanted some SOUL FOOD.
I flew in for the Cleveland Browns vs Tennessee Titans football game that I attended on 12-7th.
The maintenance worker at the hotel recommended Zanzibar in Shaker Heights.
The food was DELICIOUS
I was Totally SHOCKED that the food was so GOOD!!!!
I highly recommend ZANZIBAR in Shaker Heights to any & everyone.
The restaurant is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL

My server came out calm and took my order. The food came out quickly but almost every thing I ordered was wrong. They did change it for me quickly and we were starting to enjoy the date until the workers came out and mopped. The whole restaurant smelled like bleach and pinesol which was horrible. We got up to leave and the old bartender caught an attitude because we asked for a refill on drinks. They take gratuity out or else no tip at all but I can admit the yams, turkey chops, and potatoes were all pretty good. A little salty but the atmosphere was ghetto. I mean the customers were loud and yelling across the bar while B sitting next to each other. Overall, I probably will never ever return to Zanzibar in shaker sq again and I used to love it here years ago.

Loved everything here, especially Ms. Sandra (our server)! My mom was so happy that she tasted cabbage like her grandma used to make. I never thought I would find great southern food in Ohio!

The food was soooo good! I enjoyed the shrimp and grits, soul rolls and smothered turkey chops! My Hennessy side car made by Momma was to die for! She was an amazing server and I can’t wait to come back!

Thoroughly enjoyed my lunch experience. Food was GREAT! Would love to know about Thanksgiving specials as it’s just my mom & I in Akron and I’m already too tired to cook, lol. Sandra was very kind, professional and offered great customer service

It was an OK experience. This was our second time coming to this restaurant and everything was pretty much the same.
The service wasn’t great. We were sat immediately but our waitress took 15 minutes before she acknowledged our table. She had a very pleasant attitude and was very nice but there was no sense of urgency. Once our food order was taken, the wait for the food was not very long. My husband was pleased with his fried chicken, house potatoes, and Mac and cheese. He loved the Kool-aid. The soul rolls were cooked fine, I did not like the flavor. The collars greens and salmon bites were yummy. I gave 5 stars for the atmosphere because we enjoyed the music selection.
Also, there was an automatic 15% gratuity assessed to our bill. Im not sure if this is an Ohio thing but I have never seen this for a party of 2.

My post is a couple weeks late but nevertheless I’m going to share my recent experience. I’ve been to this establishment numerous times & have always had pleasant/positive experiences. My most recent experience there on 01/17/26, was quite the opposite. It was 2 of us & our server, Sarah (an older lady with an accent) wasn’t the most pleasant server. She barely checked on us during the meal. She spent most of her time conversating & laughing with 2-3 men who came in after we did & sat at the bar. She wasn’t their server but as much time as she spent with them & leaning on the bar laughing & talking to them, you would’ve thought she was their server. Between conversating with them & chasing after & carrying a little girl (who looked to be about 5 yrs old) around a certain area in the restaurant & even taking her into the back where the food is cooked, she had little time for us. Where we were seated, we were able to see a decent portion of the area where the food was cooked. Sarah was not friendly, when she did find time to check on us, she was short & made us feel as if our being there was disturbing her time with the 2-3 men @ the bar. When we were able to get her attention & ask for the check, she was all teeth then & actually became extra friendly… I guess for a tip. I personally didn’t feel as though she deserved a monetary tip, a verbal one but definitely not monetary & if it was up to me, she wouldn’t have gotten one. My better half tipped her because even though her service was terrible, he believes in tipping. A box was asked for for the left over food, she didn’t even offer a bag. I had a jar for my drink (purple rain), she didn’t offer a bag for that either. The gentleman who came to clean the table offered us bags & also went & got them for us. If anyone r goes & Sarah is your server, please ask for a different server. The food wasn’t as good as it previously had been either. The catfish wasn’t seasoned well & was partially cold. The tomatoes in the salad were wrinkled as if they were old. My date’s chicken was tough. Between the service & the meal, we both were overly disappointed.

UPDATE **********
Went to Zanzibar downtown, had Harold as my waiter. It was absolutely a completely different experience would highly recommend food was great. Will add pictures.. our waiter was very welcoming. He had all the recommendations on the menu and definitely stare at us in the right direction. I ordered some of the same things I got at the shaker location. Food was hot seasoning was right and to be honest, can’t really make a complaint.
I would absolutely go back, but definitely only to the downtown location
I got fried okra, house potatoes ,salmon bites, catfish fingers, blueberry muffins, sunrise kool aid, soul roll , and jerk wings….
Went during lunch hrs at the shaker square location by chance. Was greeted when walked in the door. Ordered what I thought was a lunch special. None of our food came out hot after waiting 30 or so minutes When I ordered my meal I pointed and asked for the salmon bits and instead of the fries can I have okra. The waiter never said they do not substitute or that 10 for 10 was only for Downtown. So when I got my bill and asked him about it his response was you should have read the menu. I told him my apologies but at the same time you heard me order something you don’t offer why didn’t you corrected me or just let me know. Again you should have read the menu…
This is a wild experience considering it was my first time.

My daughter and I were there Friday evening(shaker), she ordered the hot honey chicken wings, potatoes and greens which she enjoyed . I ordered salmon croquettes, cabbage, rice. The cabbage and rice were eehh decent. But The salmon, although very good I feel the portion size of the 2 patties were small. and not worth what was charged.. I would like to walk away from a restaurant saying that was good or at minimum, satisfying. I don’t want this to come off as mean spirited, but I have had better portion size , better tasting food at less expensive, equally popular restaurants in that area.

We had reservations on a Thursday night. Our other guests were arriving later and the waitstaff was able to accommodate the late arrivals. As the atmosphere soothed our souls by playing 90’s R&B my expectations grew. To my surprise, I saw fried green tomatoes on the menu, which were great. Every person we interacted with was welcoming and attentive. For the past 4 years of visiting my daughter in Ohio, this was a dramatic change for my taste buds. I will return for the southern yet up-to-date family experience Thank you to all the members who worked that night and made my experience a one to remember.
