The nigiri was definitely fresh, thick, and satisfying. Even the unagi was so delicious that it practically melted in my mouth. The rolls were also amazing.
The finale was the raw fish bibimbap — absolutely fabulous and large enough to share between two or even three people.
It was the perfect place to celebrate a special day. I will definitely visit again!
We ordered the scallop hand roll and some nigiri. I did have some concerns as I watched the staff prepare our order. They did not seem to have typical sushi chef behavior or knife skills. The handroll came first, and we had to ask if they gave us the wrong one. It tasted EXACTLY like tuna salad inside seaweed. Looked like it too. There were only shreds of meat and sauce. The server explained it was scallops, but made into a salad. What? Truly awful. So so so heavy with Kewpie mayo. I can’t imagine desecrating scallops like this. We didn’t finish it, and she offered to bring the scallop daily special handroll, which is more what we expected: whole scallops. That was nice of her to offer. Unfortunately, it was almost as bad as the first version. Now the scallops were seared, and drenched in some sweet sauce. Teriyaki I am guessing? Awful. Couldn’t taste the scallops at all.
The nigiri was a lot better but still not even close to right. The price per piece is pretty high, but they are exceptionally large. That said, it also makes them a challenge to eat. There is a reason nigiri is made bite size: so you don’t have to awkwardly bite half a piece off. I suspect the large size is to cover up the subpar knife work.
The fish quality at least was pretty good. Unfortunately, it was ruined by the terrible rice (just all kinds of wrong – way too much, and too dry amongst other issues). The toppings just made things even worse by not complementing, but overpowering the fish. The salmon belly for example: Usually such a flavorful cut, but here we could barely taste it since it was covered with the green seaweed salad that is a much stronger flavor. Scrape that all off, and there was some decent fish here. The other nigiri were similar in that the toppings, while aesthetically pleasing, did not really complement the fish at all.
Overall, one of the worst sushi experiences in Austin, especially for the price. I guess that is why we were the only customers for most of the meal. Very disappointing to say the least. They have a good fish supplier, but ruined by having no clue how to actually prepare sushi. Terrible.
I recently visited Yuki handroll bar and must say, it was an exceptional dining experience. I don’t usually right reviews but this is seriously one of my favorite spots to eat fresh sushi.
The sushi itself was out of this world! As a sushi lover who frequents various higher-end spots in Austin, I was pleasantly surprised by Yuki. The sushi rice was amazing and the texture of the sushi is excellent. Even the green tea mochi ice cream for dessert was the best I’ve had in Austin.
To top it off, the prices are reasonable for the quality you’re getting, and I left feeling like I had discovered a hidden gem. The staff was friendly and the food came out quickly after ordering, which made it even more satisfying.
Highly recommend trying it out! I will definitely come back here again.
Initially we went here for the hands rolls well because it’s a hand roll bar and we ended up trying the nigiri.
The first time I had the nigiri, I was blown away by the size of the nigiri and the flavor. Yes, traditionally sushi is supposed to be a one bite thing but the pleasure of eating these humongous pieces of sushi in 2 bites is very different. Every nigiri has this tiny garnish on it, which in my opinion adds to the deliciousness of the entire sushi.
The other thing here is their rice has seaweed in it. I might be wrong but I think they toast the seaweed to give it another layer of flavor which really works for me.
My favorites are the chu toro and the wagyu nigiri.
