Very authentic Japanese cuisine in Taupo! Just came to NZ after a trip to Japan lately and was struggling to find proper Japanese food options (many average/bad chains) so trust me when I say THIS hit the spot. Run by a team of friendly Thai staff and done super well – the Sushi and Donburi are top tier. Especially loved the Salmon Nigiri with Yuzu, Salmon Fried Rice, and the Salmon Ikura Aburi Don. Only critique is that the rice (for the Donburis) could be slightly more sticky but small issue. If you’re around Taupo and craving Japanese, highly recommend this!

Yorokobi Japanese Cuisine has a nice Japanese vibe that makes the dining experience feel authentic. The food was good and priced fairly, and the staff were friendly and kind throughout our visit. The only downside was the slow service, especially considering the restaurant wasn’t busy at the time. Overall, still a good spot to enjoy Japanese food with a relaxing atmosphere.

A truly astonishing place that captures the spirit and flavors of Japan. As we savored the sashimi, we felt ourselves whisked away from New Zealand straight into Tokyo, where only the freshest fish greets every guest. Freshness and healthfulness always go hand in hand — and it’s such a gift when a restaurant offers both with such grace. The staff were wonderfully attentive, adding even more warmth to this delicious experience. ❤️

Absolutely and utterly DIVINE, I am not exaggerating when I say I had the BEST Japanese fine dining experience yet.

I ordered the spicy salmon rolls and was blown away by both presentation and flavour. The spicy sauce left my lips tingling and the quality cut of the salmon meat was definitely distinguished from typical lunch sushi. I also had the karaage chicken sides and those were sublime and tender.

My Dad ordered the mushrooms, kimchi and miso and he was in heaven. Japanese is usually very hard to cater to vegetarian, but the flavours and execution was most remarkable (I was able to get a few nibbles in to confirm).

The BEST miso soup I have ever had. It was like a rich broth with meaty/seafood flavour that was fresh and yummy. Never experienced anything like it and now I think I am spoiled.

To finish off, we had the hot sake options and were highly pleased with the results. We love sake and it really brings together the Japanese dining experience beautifully.

The only criticism is that the mushrooms took a little long to arrive, though not egregiously. I personally felt it was worth the wait and chalked it up to how busy it was for such a little place. And the staff were extremely sweet and communicated to us in the meantime.

I love, love, LOVE Yorokobi and wish it all the success in the world! I cannot wait to go back and try the salmon donburi and ramen noodles!

We really enjoyed the food. The team were fantastic at suggesting dairy-free and vegetarian options, and the vegetarian ramen was a standout.

We just got back from Japan to discover this new Japanese restaurant in Taupo and honestly the atmosphere and quality of the food had us straight back in Japan. Really cool well done decor, superb menu and really awesome atmosphere. This will be our new local go to for dinner and can only see it getting extremely busy and very popular. It was full the night we went and has only just opened. A new trendy must do place for dinner.

I recently ventured to Yorokobi in Taupo, hoping for a delightful culinary journey through Japan. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfying. Despite the restaurant’s positive reviews, I found it difficult to understand the hype.

From the outset, the pretense of authenticity was a bit off-putting. The staff, dressed in jackets from a nearby Thai restaurant, seemed incongruous with the Japanese theme. However, it was the food that truly disappointed. The ramen, a cornerstone of Japanese cuisine, was a far cry from the standards I’ve come to expect. It felt more like a bland broth than a hearty, flavorful bowl of ramen.

The sizzling squid was an even bigger letdown. Served lukewarm on a cold iron plate, it was a culinary disaster. We also ordered dumplings, which were equally disappointing. The wrappers were not thin and silky as expected but rather thick and riddled with holes. The filling had a strange, watery consistency that was not particularly tasty.

Given the restaurant’s high prices, the experience was extremely disappointing. I’m left wondering if perhaps the positive reviews are based on outdated experiences or simply a lack of exposure to authentic Japanese cuisine. If you’re seeking a truly satisfying Japanese dining experience, I would recommend exploring other options in Taupo.

Found this new restaurant by accident, since they haven’t updated their hour so we had to go twice. They open from 11am to 10pm every day, close on Monday. The restaurant is cozy, and I did like their decorations a lot. Food was not disappointed at all. We ordered Salmon aburi roll, salmon omurice, sashimi platter, and wagyu beef. We enjoyed the roll a lot, highly recommend it. The sashimi was fresh, they even had monkfish which tasted so delicious. The wagyu beef was chewy, and the salmon omurice was a bit bland. Definitely will come back to try other rolls they have!

Beautiful food, great service and the decor inside is amazing.

Definitely recommend – had the salmon cheese nigiri, veg tempura and unagi don and it was really, really excellent.

Despite being super busy the staff were really attentive and helpful.
