Yong’s Kal-Bi

  4.7 – 307 reviews   • Korean restaurant

We are a family owned and operated restaurant serving Korean and locally inspired dishes. Yong’s has been serving Waimea for over 30 years. Our service is fast-casual in style. Our claim to fame is our Kalbi (grilled soy-garlic marinated beef short ribs). We use premium grade well-marbled beef and also strive to use as much locally grown produce as possible. Our menu is extensive and varied. We offer seafood; try the Spicy Squid or the Korean-style Butterfish. We have an extensive Vegan and Vegetarian menu including the popular Mungbean Pancake and Spicy Tofu stir-fry. Come try our famous banchans (side dishes), especially the house-made kimchis and the local pipinola shoots. So next time you’re in Waimea, come eat what Waimea eats.

Family-owned Korean and Hawaiian-inspired fare in a casual setting with family-friendly seating.

Absolutely incredible experience! The food here is consistently amazing — every dish is packed with flavor and clearly made with so much care and attention to detail. Beyond the food, what truly sets this place apart is the hospitality. Libbey makes you feel genuinely welcomed the moment you walk in. You can really feel the heart behind this business, and it shows in everything from the service to the atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a spot with outstanding food, next-level hospitality, and a staff that truly cares, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back!

In California, we’re spoiled with delicious Korean food and so many Korean restaurants I would say, if you are in mood of Korean food like California then visit this location. Food portion is massive and pricing is reasonable. You have to order the food and then take a seat. My kids wanted chicken and rice and they were fully satisfied and content with the taste. Especially, my picky son has tough time trying new restaurant but this place meets my six year old’s expectation.

I loved their spicy shrimp stir-fry and the side dishes. My daughter liked the glass noodles and fish cakes. Those were delicious.

I would totally recommend this restaurant and come back again.

I had high hopes before stepping into the restaurant based the Google rating/reviews but the food gods were not on my side today…food was bland/watered down…..perhaps to meet local tastes? But in an effort to meet local/everyone’s taste, they stripped away the bright/fiery/bold flavorus that makes Korean food so special. If you have the time, it’s best to drive 60 min more to Hilo and try Cham Cham Korean BBQ Restaurant (the best Korean food on Big Island in my humble opinion). My wife and I had the following dishes: 1) Kimchi Chigae/Stew (watered down/bland taste); 2) Seaweed Soup (not bad but a bit too salty); 3) Fish Mahi Mahi Jun (tasty but a tad salty)….we got 3 side banchan for each dish….all were tasty and what made the review rating go from a potential 2 to a 3 rating. If you’re in the Waimea area and don’t have the time to drive to Hilo, would stick with Bibimbap….we didn’t order this dish but it looked like a lot of locals were eating that + hard to screw that up 🙂

We got there right when they opened and lined came in through… that’s when you know it’s good.

It’s been awhile since I was here but I was craving meat Jun (#1) so badly !

If you’re k-pop fans they were jamming some kpop.

If you dine in there are a few tables to eat at! You have to bus your own tables, they have the dish station in the front to the left.

They had the daily bread in Korean which was cool to just see something in Korean.

The menu is so nicely written out, and it’s in both English AND Korean which is cool to see.

The staff is busy, but patient with all of us.

3 veggies! Faves are jap chae, seaweed, bean sprouts.

Great place! The kimichi soup tasted authentic, with plenty of ingredients and meat. All entrees came with three side dishes for free. highly recommend, especially during rainy day, you’ll be impressed for sure.

Best Korean food on the island. Moved to Vegas 5 years ago and every time I visit I gotta stop here. Haven’t found a better Korean place yet and I’ve traveled all over the USA. The number 23 is unreal but their chicken katsu and katsu sauce is like no other Always ask for extra sauce when ordering the Katsu. The lady working the register is very friendly and helpful I would definitely recommend trying here and get the number 23 or their chicken katsu.

We ordered Kalbi $29, and bugogi $18. Both dishes came with rice and 3 sides, big enough to share. We also ordered the mushroom pancake of the day. You order at the front and they bring you the food, and you have to bus your own table. Flavors were good, kalbi wasn’t too tender and didn’t have a char bbq as one might expect, bugogi was three large slice of beef (not like the pre-sliced version we had in the mainland US). It took me some time to cut the bugogi, and the meat got cold real fast. I wish they’d served them on the hot plates. Interior looks old, but big enough to not worry about seating. This place would not do well in mainland USA, but probably ranks top on this island. I would come back if I live here.

A truly mom & pop shop with great service and great food. This Korean restaurant has the regular Korean food but also some daily specials using whatever they get from the market that day.

I have been wanting to try dishes made with breadfruit, also known as ulu on the island. I was pleasantly surprised to saw on their daily special, Korean pancake made with ulu & mungbean. This dish was truly vegan, just 2 simple ingredients. It was so good, I came back 2 more times just to eat this pancake, and I’m not even vegan .

Their plates are huge and generously priced. Each item comes with 3 sides + rice or 4 sides. The boss lady run the front, and her husband is the chef in the kitchen. There are drinks for sale but you could also just stick with the free water and hot barley tea.

We came back on the last day before leaving the island to eat the ulu pancake one more time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available that day because the ulu wasn’t ripe yet. The boss lady was so nice, she presented us with a free kimbap before we leave as a go-away gift

Amazing Korean home cooking! We are from California and have great access to Korean food, and thought this place was bomb.

We got the garlic chive onion pancake, tofu bibimbop and the 22 combo with Korean chicken, bulgogi and mandu. The tofu bibimbop was so flavorful, all the veggies were seasoned or pickled perfectly. The Korean chicken was our favorite of the combo plate.

Giant portions too, as well as really sweet staff. It you’re thinking about coming in, do it!
