I’m moving reviews over from Yelp. This was the STL ROTD on 11/1/17:

Man do I wish I had not come here for a business lunch. No indictment of the food or the service is implied or intended by that comment. Mainly I’m just torqued that I didn’t feel like it would have been appropriate to take a picture of my lunch and it was one damn fine looking plate of food!

These guys are apparently known for their walleye. When we lived in Springfield, IL it was THE thing to go out for walleye and everyone had their favorite place. I tried everyone’s places but never really fell in love with any of them. I have to say that I now have a favorite place as well…but it’s in Chesterfield, MO.

I started with a bowl of their clam chowder. It was just as rich & creamy as the waitress told me it would be when she suggested it as a starter. Plenty of clams too. Surprisingly enough, their inclusion of large pieces of fresh celery was not as off-putting as I expected and I may have actually enjoyed it a little bit in this presentation. Not enough to eat all of it but I only left 3 chunks.

Next up was the star attraction…the walleye. Whole fillets of fish, breaded in seasoned bread crumbs and crispy, flaky, moist – pick a word to describe a great piece of fried fish and I’m sure it would apply to their walleye. I will most certainly crave this stuff in the future and I’m happy to know that they are a veritable institution out in west county. I’m not a native of the area so I consider this to be a hidden gem and I am left wondering how it took me so long to find a place with virtually perfect fried walleye.

One note…I’m several years beyond the point where I had to change the hair color I list on official documents to “grey” but I brought the average age in this place down by a number of years merely by walking in the door.

I have lived in 7 states in my life and this is one of my the best restaurants I’ve ever been too. Consistently the best Walleye in the world and the ambiance for a fisherman/hunter like myself is top notch. The most underrated restaurant in Saint Louis. If I was on death row and they asked me what I wanted for my last meal I would say “TAKE ME TO YELLOWSTONE CAFE PLEASE”.

I had the clam strips and they were delicious. My side items of slaw and the peas with mushrooms were good. There was plenty of food. I took half of it home. The rest of the party dining with me enjoyed their food also. It was super busy but our waitress stayed pleasant and checked on us frequently.

Not a lot of gluten free options and they charge you to use your credit card. Waitress was good and she was friendly and knew the fries had gluten on them so I was appreciative when she told me. Probably a good place if you don’t have celiacs

Really enjoyed the ambiance of this place and it was not super busy. The walleye was on point as usual. What threw me was the server recommended the chicken tenders and they just weren’t good at all. I assumed they would be hand battered but they seemed like frozen and maybe not even freshly fried. The broccoli was really good and the cheese with the crackers! Service was exceptional.

I rarely do reviews but feel like this place definitely deserves one! We were passing through the area googled “food near me”, we are on. Yellowstone kick right now so decided to try the Yellowstone cafe. Zero expectations. It started with spreadable cheese and crackers that was very nostalgic for me as I was eating them thinking how I used to eat that as a child and it made me smile. But when our food came out, a hamburger & a steak, we were blown away by the flavor! I made my husband taste my burger & I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time I had a GREAT burger! My husband gets a ribeye & an old fashion everywhere he goes, but he kept saying over & over “wow, now that is good!” In reference to his steak.. I highly recommend if you are in the area!

The food was good and the waitress was super friendly. I had the walleye platter. Fish was just lightly breaded, tasted great. Fries were nice and crisp. Side Salad was different, sunflower seeds and beans.

I have been eating here for years. Today, told they are charging 3% for taking a credit card? Really, in a restaurant? Never have I seen this before…and maybe a coincidence but the service was not good today and food overcooked…signs of trouble – restaurants surcharging…and it’s likely a poor choice in your processor adding fees- direct card rates with visa/Mc/Amex are not 3%.. they are lower. Not sure we will be back which is sad! Loved clams and crab cakes!!

I take my 93 year old companion there on a somewhat regular basis. We went there the other day with limited time before a doctor’s appointment. Even with the holiday rush, they still accommodated our lunch and got us out of there in just over 45 minutes. The dining room was a bit noisy when it was full. Further, there’s excellent teamwork with the hostess providing exceptional support to the wait staff. ❤️
