We’ve been to Yamato a few times. It’s a small family-run place, and the staff are always friendly. They’ve got some vegetarian and vegan options – sushi rolls, soups, tofu dishes, and more. The inside is really nice, even though you might not guess that from the outside. The food’s always been delicious. I’d definitely recommend it in general and if you’re vegetarian.

This was the first time many of us had sushi, so we were a bit skeptical; we were there for an SIU graduation and the graduate made reservations so we went along with it.

We had a large group and they were able to accommodate all of us. Very friendly staff – the chef even came out to speak with us to see how everything was. The food was so beautifully and creatively arranged! It was an art form!! We may need to make a reason to come back to town just so we can go again!

A very delicious restaurant. I’d say the only weak point is the fried rice,not bad at all, just compared to other places, but literally everything else was amazing.
Even the free miso soup was yummy.
Chicken Katsu was crunchy and juicy, steak hibachi was perfect, even devoured the salad.
If you like Japanese food, you will love this place.

Hola me señora CAM I went to sushi and I was accompanied by 3 men dancing doing the cha cha slide and they were eating Mexican food they had sushi, noodles, and rice it looked good. I came with sun and dotter which they were impacted by this beautiful dancing they joined. Even my great grandmas moms stomach nephews sons moms suns dooters great grandma started dancing. And grandma fell over. It’s okay she got picked up and my dotter went on her wheel chair and used it like a tron bike snd stole someone’s walker. And gave it to her! She was a life saver. Did you know that I like chicken. I thanked my dotter by making her clean the toilet seat. I gave her a half of penny. She used it and put it in her piggie bank. While we were sitting our food came with chicken. I love chicken. He started cooking and was doing the tricks and missed he hit my sun and his wheel chair tire popped. We were sad. And it’s okay. I like chicken. We got our food I got extra egg. And I ate all my food, we installed a pocket in my son’s wheel chair and he put the food in it. His mouth is shut so he has to eat out of a tube. My brother took my fiance and I out here and we all got sushi. We got what we expected and more. It was absolutely delicious. Mind you, we are from washington state where we would usually get fresh fish, cut and rolled in front of us. It was outstanding and we plan on making ourselves regulars! If youre looking for sushi that wont make you sick, this is the spot! We had an amazing waitress. Very respectful and made sure our order was correct. She was patient. We each got 3 rolls to ourselves. Can’t wait to come back!

I heard the sushi was good, but it’s really the best in the area (IMHO). The appetizer of Crab Rangoon set the stage and the variety of rolls my son & I had completed the outstanding performance by the chef. The server was polite, professional, & extremely competent. I’ll be back!!

Yamato Steak House of Japan in Carbondale is so amazing!! We’ve been coming here for awhile but they have so many new things!! Kani salad, crab rangoons with the yummiest sauce, ramen, and so many new rolls! Also the boba is so creamy!! They were always good but I genuinely think this is the best sushi and Asian eats in Southern Illinois the service was also so amazing and so kind!

Entree was the Salmon Roe (Ikura) Sashimi, Soy Tofu Skin Sashimi (top right), White Tail Roll (bottom) and the Sakura Roll (middle). Topped with shredded radish and an orchid! Absolutely delicious and beautiful ! Service was great! Go check out their new menu

My niece and I were looking for a restaurant that had little to no wait times since it was the weekend. As soon as we arrived, we were seated. We usually order drinks for the table but they only had water and tea at the moment. The staff is very friendly and will check up on you to make sure everything is good. My only complaint is taste and quality. I ordered a sea scallop hibachi dinner with rice and veggies, they over salted my food. Their shumai is good and the rolls are decent. For myself, I’d rather spend the extra money and go to Fujiyama’s.
