This is the best Japanese food I have ever had in Johannesburg. Whether it is skewers, ramen, chawanmushi, sushi, plum wine, or beef dumplings, there are a wide variety of dishes and the prices are reasonable! I’ll be back to try the other options on the menu! And recommend it to my friends around me

Still South Africa’s leading Japanese Restaurant.
Authentic Japanese cuisine.
Today I had a variety of dishes, including the lesser known Natto (fermented soya beans). The Bento box lunch special was absolutely amazing! There were Japanese pickles, katsu don (crumbed pork), with salmon teriyaki, gomma ae (Japanese spinach with sesame paste) steamed rice and miso soup.
A visit is never complete without gyoza – (pork dumplings).
Highly recommended.

Tucked away in the middle of slick Melrose Arch, where even the asphalt shines, is a “Japanese” restaurant with a minimalist interior, golden samurai on sarcophagi, and a piece of wisdom on the wall that makes you run away: “People who love to eat are always the best people.” Thanks for nothing, Pinterest. The restroom is only accessible after successfully completing a key quest. At least the food came quickly. Sushi was world-class. Ramen was more meh, and my chicken stir-fry in vinegar water was more of a culinary attack. For the price, I expect more than half-decent main courses and Insta-worthy wisdom. Sushi 100%, the rest was rather meh.

The food is amazing and I feel like I’m truly eating authentic Japanese food. We had soba, Ramen, and. Somen And they were delicious made fresh. The gyoza is also handmade! If you’re ever in Johannesburg and want authentic Japanese food, definitely try it out, you won’t be disappointed! I highly recommended.

I’ve eaten at many standout Japanese ramen restaurants, and this hidden gem absolutely holds its own alongside some of the best ramen I’ve had in the U.S.—including Daikokuya in Los Angeles, Ichiran in New York, Toyori in Houston, and Tsujita.

This is authentic Hokkaido-style ramen at its finest. The noodles are made in-house and have an exceptional texture—springy, fresh, and deeply satisfying. The broth is rich, comforting, and clearly homemade, based on a recipe passed down through generations. The owner is from Hokkaido, and that heritage shines through in every bite.

Christine is often there in person, making sure each dish comes out perfectly, and that level of care truly shows. Even the pan-fried pork gyoza could stand alone as a main dish—they were that memorable.

You can genuinely taste the love, tradition, and pride poured into this food. This is destination-worthy ramen and a true hidden gem that deserves to be discovered. I’ll absolutely be back.

They were so helpful. We did not have Reservations but they managed to accommodate us. The food was amazing. Enjoyed the freshness of the springroll. The presentation of the food was done well. We had the set menu A. Was well worth it.

Firstly, the Melrose arch is a beautiful place.
Now on to this Yamato Review.
1. The Service is slow AF.
2. Server is lifeless. Adds no value to the experience.
3. Ordered the curry spring roll, it was warm on the outside and cold on the inside.
4. Ordered the Miso Chasu ramen, lol, it’s literally miso soup with “chasu” inside. Sad times here.
5. Ordered fried noodles, they were bland. :/
6.The sparkling (bottled water) was great.
7. I gave this place two stars because it was in Africa, and I can’t seem to roast other blacks fully in my reviews.
