The place is small but with the patio seating it looked amazing. Sushi chef on point greeting everyone in a Japanese tradition. Got my cold Asahi, wife order the roll which looked phenomenal and we got oyster shooters. Unfortunately my meal never made it. They had the order stuck in the printer for 45 minutes. Decided to leave and experience the beautiful day in Grover Beach. Maybe next time. Pricing on the menu was pricey but I can’t say worth it or not. Never tasted it. 🙁

Ordered Ginger Pork Ramen. Looked and tasted like miso ramen. The pork was not seasoned. They sliced it from a pork lion in thick slices and it was so dry. The noodles were too hard. Very disappointing! Not worth the money. The restaurant smelled like a fish market.

Upon a visit to Pismo beach, we came across this wonderful gem of a restaurant.
Amazing sushi, the freshest I had for a long time. The seafood salad was out of this world so fresh and unique, also the fresh oysters tasted like the ocean very fresh and good.
The sashimi platter to die for. Everything we ordered was unique and awesome. Server was very friendly and good.
Definitely we’ll be back for more on our next visit to Pismo beach.

A hole-in-the-wall restaurant could be the next best Japanese restaurant in Grover Beach. They offer quality and a variety of creatively curated sushi and sashimi. The chef prepared us a special tray of sashimi that includes fatty tuna and wagyu beef that melts in your mouth. Everything we ordered was fantastic, except the Salmon Skin Salad and Seafood salad. They were ok but could use better greens, and it lacks solid salad ingredients to make it worth it. The place may lack ambiance, but the food will wow you.

I saw a lot of comments about the portions being small. But the truth is the amount of food is just right, the quality of the food here is better, but it’s pricier than other local Japanese restaurants. If you’re used to big chunky rolls packed with rice, you won’t get it from this place.

Overall I give Yamato at least a 4.0-4.5 star. Top-notch quality food with good service though it lacks ambiance and some items on the menu is pricey.

Somewhat disappointing! Not as authentic as we had expected, a bit fusion. The restaurant smelled kind of greasy and the floor was kind of sticky. Wish it was cleaner. Service staff was friendly and attentive. The quality of sashimi was average and so was the flavors.

Decent Japanese restaurant near downtown Pismo beach. Food overall was good. Unagi was amazing. Albacore roll wasn’t out favorite as the combination of flavors didn’t blend well for us. Spicy rolls weren’t spicy but quality of fish was good. A bit on expensive side – sushi is generally expensive..
It was super dark inside and a bit difficult as light and dark contract made it difficult to have a normal conversation with group you come with.

Loved it! Best sushi experience that I’ve had in a long time. Fresh fish, beautiful flavors. Also, order the fresh wasabi, worth the $3 extra. Outdoor seating area is nice for those that aren’t yet comfortable being indoors. Will definitely be back soon!

Although the restaurant is very nice, it is way too small, just like the restaurants in Japan . I bet that you might have to wait a long time to get in if you arrive during peak time.
The food was good. Especially the uni was very buttery and fresh.
The only thing about this restaurant that I don’t like is the furniture; the chair cover was covered in stains. Hopefully, they will replace everything to give the restaurant a cleaner appearance.

We ordered the Mixed Tempura, Galbi Ramen, Cheese Golden California, and Sushi Combo B.

Mixed Tempura: about 6 pieces of vegetables and 2 shrimp. $13, and it was pretty good.

Galbi Ramen: $17. I wasn’t too impressed with this. The portion size is great. The Korean BBQ beef and fish cakes were good, but there wasn’t anything about it that set it apart from a bowl of ramen I could make at home.

Cheese Golden California: $14. Way too much cream cheese, and the avocado didn’t appear to be that fresh. I added quite a bit of Wasabi to it, and despite too much cream cheese, I quite liked it.

Sushi Combo B: $34. The nigiri came out several minutes after the Salmon Skin Sushi roll, so long that we thought they had forgotten about it. The pieces are large with a bit of Wasabi and lemon added for seasoning. For the price, it was disappointing.

The location itself is nice, clean, and cheerful. Service was pretty quick and helpful. There was a mistake made that said we had 22 guests, with an added $20 “large party fee.” This was fixed after bringing it up, but I wonder if that happens often and if people catch it.

Overall, the price on everything was expected, the service was good, and the food was just ok.

The only place I will go for sushi. Consistently the best sashimi, rolls, and customer service. Worth the 30 minute drive.
