The best meal I’ve had in about 2 years. I knew I had to be in the right place when I had to wait in line. The bluefin tuna was to die for. The squid salad was Smokey and Rich. I haven’t had my plumb wine since my mom. The sake was a little tart. Both the staff and customer clientele were kind. The place was wonderful and cozy and had a wholesome feeling. This is the kind of place I’ll think about in 10 years from now.

By far the best sushi place I have ever been to and I’ve been to every single sushi place in Houston and have had sushi in Japan.

Their fish is super fresh. I highly recommend the shaggy dog and the spicy salmon roll. I’ve never had fresher salmon. They definitely set the standard for outstanding sushi.

We ended up at Yamato on Galveston Island on the one-year anniversary of losing my son, AJ — and in the way I see the world, that timing matters. The last time we did hibachi with these same cousins was in Kemah in 2023, when AJ was still with us. So finding Yamato on the island on this exact date felt like a sign we chose the right place to be.

What made it hit even deeper is the calendar shift happening right now — the end of the Snake year and the start of the Horse with Lunar New Year beginning. In many Asian traditions, timing and symbols carry meaning. For me, this felt like a closing and a new beginning in the same breath — a reminder that AJ is still with us on this journey.

I didn’t plan any of it, which is part of why it felt so meant-to-be. My cousin’s son is old enough now to do the research and help decide where we go, and somehow it all came together effortlessly.

The service was excellent. Our waitress was genuinely kind and handled our requests and modifications with ease — no attitude, no confusion, just attentive and on it. The chef was entertaining and engaging without going over the top (which we appreciated). The seating stations were great, the experience was smooth, and we were genuinely glad we tried it.

If you’re looking for hibachi on the island with great service and a comfortable, fun vibe, Yamato is it. We’ll be back.

This place was outstanding! Maggie our server was crazy awesome, we just asked for her to serve us what she would think we liked to eat and it did not disappoint! The chefs were also on point. I can’t recommend this place enough for atmosphere friendly staff and super delicious fresh sushi.
