We started as a family business that first opened our door in 2003. Calling ourselves as just Yama at the time, we only had four tables, truly being just a hole in the wall. Through an arduous process of many trials and errors, Andy Chen was able to perfect the now YamaChen menu to that we know today. Each day, for our customers, Andy Chen brainstormed ways to improve the quality of our food, from our in house sauce to our fish providers, creating the signature YamaChen rolls that solidify our place in the restaurant sphere. He believes that his success is due to his motto: Freshness, Sincerity, and Generosity.

YamaChen’s sushi was an amazing new experience for my boyfriend and I in Virginia Beach. He recently moved to the area and I came to visit him and we stopped here based on others reviews.
The staff and atmosphere are absolutely worthy of a 5-star review. So kind and attentive and the inside does genuinely remind me of a sushi-bar in Japan while still having a modern American touch.
We ordered sushi boat #2 and loved all of it but one roll. It missed the mark just slightly for us. It had crab in it and was slightly tangy. The gyoza were AWESOME. They also gave us complimentary spring rolls which had great crunch but were a tad mushy on the inside. Then at the end you’re given cheesecake bites as a dessert. Those were awesome too.
Overall if I could do a half star rating I’d definitely say 4.5/5. I’d love to come back and try different sushi.

I’ve gone to a lot of sushi places in Virginia Beach, but this is definitely one of my better experiences. The sushi was delicious. The complimentary veggie rolls and desserts were just as tasty. Service was excellent, and the atmosphere is very welcoming.

This place is beautiful. Loved the decorations and colors. The service was friendly. I ordered the dancing roll and spicey salmon. My friend had the volcano and shrimp tempura roll. They were all amazing I cannot choose a favorite roll as they were all just too good to decide! Highly recommend and I will be coming back

First and last time in, I think. Food was barely mediocre. Takoyaki octopus was very tough and hard to chew, but the flavor of that was okay. My son got the Stone roll which was a deep fried roll (I know, I know, he’s 8 and just starting his journey lol), and they were so heavy and hard, that they were almost inedible. Not much flavor either. Just boring hard fried rocks. I got an eel roll, specifically because I wanted something without avocado, and almost everything else on the roll menu had avocado. The roll was just avocado and eel. Never had my drink refilled, until the check was presented and then was asked if I wanted more. Honestly the complimentary edamame was the best thing we got All around disappointment. Just a surprise after reading so many nice reviews.

Came here on a Saturday at 1, they open at 12 Sat-Sun. Service was great and food was really nice and great too. Everything from the environment to the food was very welcoming and pleasant. Fair prices. We got 3 free things- complimentary Veggie rolls, complimentary Edemame, Complementary little cheesecake bites!

Amazing service, amazing food, amazing company! We came in during during a busy time, roughly 630 – 7pm. Our waitress, jie, was busting her butt to make sure all her tables were happy and satisfied and she broke the scale in my book. She had 7 tables by herself and I snooped and saw smiles all around!! You can tell she takes pride in her work! 10/10 recommend and will 100% be coming here again!!!

Ordered fried gyoza as an appetizer perfectly fried 10/10. fire chicken (not spicy) for our toddler, came with a ton of chicken the picture they use on the menu doesn’t do it justice 10/10. Got the spicy tuna roll 9/10. Crazy stone roll, i was forwarned but didnt really listen to the server. They come out as legot little stones that are very hard to chew and cant taste anything inside pver the breading 2/10. Crazy volcano was awesome 9/10. Spicy California, wife docked points because she wanted a little.more crunch 7/10. They gave us spring rolls (10/10 they were perfectly fried and delicious) and cheesecake bites (9/10 they were soft and creamy) on the house. Great experience food came out fast and servers were very attentive.

Consistently excellent, beautiful sushi rolls & sashimi. Faves are Iron Man Roll, California Roll, Volcano Roll, Candy Cane Roll, & Eel Roll. Also like Gyoza & Shrimp Tempura. Always friendly service. Good place to relax, cool decorations in the interior.
