From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed with the charm and comfort of this cozy cafe. The food is like classic homemade comfort food, and the meal sets and rice bowls are presented beautifully! My go-to is the Tuna Tataki Bowl with a matcha latte. You must give their ichigo (strawberry) daifuku a try too! Fresh and sweet strawberry wrapped in a red bean paste filling, all tucked into mochi. If you’re able to go in before 11:00AM, I highly recommend their morning set. My favourite Japanese breakfast in Vancouver ♥️

Absolute hidden gem in the neighborhood. This is a mom and pop shop, it’s small, you walk in, order at the register and pay. They give you a number and bring your food to the table.

We tried the all day combos:
Tuna Tataki Bowl ($15) to make it a combo (+$3) – combo had the soup, vegetables and a small dessert muffin. Absolutely delicious! Tuna had spices, and it was the perfect about. Everything from the tuna to the side dishes was so good. The mochi muffin was “meh”, but we couldn’t pick the flavor we wanted, so a random dessert muffin.

Pork Belly Teri Bowl ($15) also (+$3 for combo) – choice of white rice, 8 grain rice (+$2) or mixed greens (+$3). Gravy on the pork belly was very tasty. Pork Belly was very tender, just melts in the mouth.

Also had drinks:
Matcha Latte ($5) – great matcha taste
Hojicha Latte ($5) – very strong hojicha taste as well.

It was a little warm and air conditioning was not very strong. But they had the door opened, so it wasn’t too stuffy.

Customer service was great! Chef was doing the cooking and lady was taking the orders, but super nice couple.

Although we thought it was a little pricey, it was worth it for such a good meal.

Walking into Yama Cafe, I felt like I was instantly transported back to Japan. It has the authentic aesthetics of a cozy family-run restaurant ready to serve up the comfort food that will heal your soul. The pork belly set meal is unforgettable, because the pork belly was so tender that it easily falls apart just from picking it up. It was a great meal and I will definitely be back.

Great family run restaurant and it feels like home, clearly a lot of care put into the food and drinks, a very calm, warm atmosphere. 1 hour time limit for tables when it’s busy but well worth the visit.

They have great baked goods/treats like mochi muffins, daifuku and other pasteries. Plus seasonal drinks like strawberry white matcha lattee and roasted sweet potato lattee.

The cutest and most charming café ever. The interior offers a glimpse into the everyday life of the lovely owner couple, and just when you start to feel relaxed from taking it all in, the food arrives. The portions were smaller than expected, but the taste was absolutely top-notch. I had to leave quickly to get to work, but it was the kind of place I could have stayed in all day. The desserts I took to go were also incredibly delicious. I’m already looking forward to visiting again soon.

Really great food and such a cute atmosphere. We loved their spin on eggs Benedict so much and all the little extra that came with the lunch set, made for an exciting meal. Need to return soon as I now want to try everything in the menu.

We arrived at 11:30 on a Saturday and there were about 2-3 tables available. You order your food and pay at the front before you get seated.

I ordered a Pork Belly bowl lunch set, which came with the bowl, a small fresh veggie appetizer, pickled vegetables, miso soup, and their moffin (mini mochi muffin)! This cost $21 which I think is quite fair for a small family owned cafe.

The pork belly was delicate and melts in your mouth with rich flavour. The rest of the lunch set were nice to have as they added a lot more variety to my meal, and although individually they aren’t anything that to write about, they do a great job at combining together to form a well rounded lunch.

The presentation of the food is lovely, so it is a feast for both the eyes and mouth.
The ambiance is also very homey, very warm. Quiet music plays in the cafe as young Japanese children chatter among each other at the toys & crafts table. It really gives the impression that you’re visiting someone’s home for lunch.

Overall, I was very pleased with my visit, and they will likely see me again in the future!

Food is perfect. Perfect seasoning, perfect texture, perfect plating. The pork belly bowl in particular was sublime. The tuna tataki was great too. Can’t complain at $15 a bowl. Matcha latte well made and presented.

But the wait was kinda long. 10 minutes to get order taken, 20 to get drinks, 30 to get food. If you don’t mind a leisurely pace, it’s fine. But if you’re hangry, best to go across the street.

I was so happy and delighted at Yama Cafe in the morning. It felt just like being in Japan. The cozy atmosphere, the sound of food being prepared, and the adorable presence of two little boys gave me a refreshing boost away from my daily routine. The food was also perfect. I missed food like this(Mom’s made)I felt proud of giving my body healthy and delicious food (even though I realized from all the photos that I had ordered 8-grain rice ). They were truly kind. Thanks! I am sure that I will highly recommend this restaurant and continue to visit it.
