My kids loved the caramel pudding and couldn’t stop talking about it. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. It truly felt like stepping into Japan through a single door.
We will definitely be coming back!
Everything was thoughtfully prepared from the lattes to the food. The chicken karaage curry was definitely a standout: crispy, flavorful chicken with rich curry. I also ordered the Monster Roll, and it was absolutely worth it. If you’re a matcha lover I definitely recommend the Matcha Tiramisu. The portion size was perfect and very satisfying.
Great atmosphere, quality food, and a cozy vibe overall.
Speaking of my order, I settled on tonkastu shoyu ramen plus egg, salmon sashimi, and a rainbow roll sub spicy mayo for wasabi mayo.
First to arrive was the sashimi. It was delicious! Tender and smooth, not at all chewy. My rainbow roll was next and it was also delicious. The rice wasn’t packed tightly together, fish was fresh and tasty. Even though there are 2 sauces, it was seasoned perfectly. Finally came my ramen. Broth was rich and flavourful and not heavily salted like at some other places. Pork was tender, mushrooms added a nice crunch, and egg was creamy and perfectly done. Slurrrrrrp. The djner beside me was a regular; he just looked at the servers and they confirmed his order. That should tell you something; this place is worth coming back to.
Service was friendly and prompt. As I mentioned, this place is very cozy… people were bumping into me as they walked behind me to their tables and I had to squeeze past the other diners to exit my seat. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no place to put your coat when at the bar.
Cheap food isn’t good, good food isn’t cheap. I don’t think I could eat here every day but it’s definitely worth it for a delicious meal.
Very homey mom and pop atmosphere, and the service has never failed us. I must say, because of the restaurant size, the waitlist can be long when it’s busy. But it’s worth the wait!!
Our go to dishes are the bento boxes and the bonburi bowls This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the city—we have a saying where we “crave y93” every now and then. Definitely recommend!!
I am happy to say that Y93 Sushi Crave met the challenge with flying colours for the lunch we had enjoyed.
We had split a spicy salmon sushi roll to start and it was nice. A quick shout out to the presentation on the wasabi, as it looked to have been stamped down to look like a leaf. Full disclosure: I didn’t get a great look or a picture of it before my teenage son dove right in to eat the appy as he was hungry.
My son had ordered his go-to Ramen with a side of gyozas (of which we graciously shared one with me) and I had ordered the Japanese Curry chicken Karrage.
We’ll start with the gyozas: this continues to be a split decision as they are fried crispy all around. Not my preference, but my son claims they are his favourite (1st in Calgary and 2nd only to a plate of gyozas he had in Japan). Hard not to give it a 5 out of 5 when someone at the table raves about them so much!
The Ramen, what can we say about that? Much like the gyozas, 1st place in Calgary and 3rd when compared to what he tried in Japan. Fun note: since we’ve returned from Japan he’s been recreating Ramen dishes at home and wanted to go to Y93 Sushi Crave to take notes and try to replicate some of the authenticity. 5/5 again.
The Curry Chicken Karrage was also 5/5. The portion was aggressively large even considering I did not have breakfast. Presentation was beautiful, and the food was flavourful and did not disappoint in the slightest.
As others have mentioned, the location is a bit small and there is not much room to maneuver for other groups, but with the right timing (ie. before it fills up – because it will!) you should be able to get a seat. We were able to be seated right away this time, however, due to the size you may be disappointed if they are full and you have to wait or go somewhere else. When you are inside, it can feel a little cramped and the tables are just a smidge too close where you almost feel part of the other table’s conversations. When the weather is nice there is a small outside area for about 3 more tables available, but your dining ambience would just be a parking lot. But hey, they are working with the space they have. 4/5
The service was great as well. It is small and has that family-owned vibe and with us we didn’t feel like we had a single server, but pretty much anyone who was there in that moment would help us. Very friendly and you can tell that they care about the patrons having a good experience. 5/5.
We love it there and will continue going back.
Today we had the karage curry, aburi salmon don (w. Spicy mayo), potato croquettes, and a lovely sesame latte! Everything was delicious!!!
We also tried the mentaiko mazemen, which was very good! Would recommend this one.
Price is generally higher than other places but kinda expected for a small shop with so few seats (3 tables and maybe 6 or 8 seats at the bar). We were turned off by the fact that they charge extra for eggs in ramen dishes, despite the photos all include an egg in the dish.
Service was fine, staff was friendly; we didn’t need much attention. Only thing was that they didn’t offer water after we sat down, even though they came to ask if we were ready to order; we had to ask.
The space was small but cozy and cute. We sat at the bar and there wasn’t a place to put my jacket or purse except the floor. I made do holding onto them on my lap but it would be awkward if you have a heavy jacket in the winter. Not sure if they would have a rack or something when it’s colder though.
So we are still on the hunt for a place that serves proper soup curry.
I ordered “extra spicy” ramen… but apparently my friend decided that wasn’t dramatic enough and wrote in the instructions:
“Extra spicy. Super hot please. I want my BUTT to burn with the passion of 10,000 suns. I want my intestines liquefied.”
…And the restaurant said: say less.
When the order arrived, the bags had hand-drawn warnings. One had a concerned noodle-slurping cat whispering “good luck,” and the other was just a stark warning “WARNING VERY SPICY!!” with a little guy who clearly witnessed war crimes.
This should’ve been my clue.
We opened the containers and I swear the broth was the exact shade of the Red Wedding. The top was just… oil. Pure chili oil. No broth. A shimmering, ruby-red portal to Satan’s bathtub.
And the bottom? I thought it was ground pork.
It was not pork.
It was just more chili.
I poured half of it into my bowl thinking I’d be fine because my ancestors literally invented fire. The moment the spoon hit my tongue, I saw God. My soul left my body. I had a brief conversation with my childhood pet. I knew fear.
My friend dipped ONE chopstick into the broth, tasted that microscopic drop, and immediately began coughing like he’d just survived a chemical weapons test.
Then we tried to “strain” the ramen as if that would help. Spoiler: it did NOT help. When we dumped the broth in the sink, the steam hit our faces and pepper-sprayed the entire kitchen. We basically maced ourselves with ramen.
I tried again, thinking maybe the watered-down version would be manageable. Nope.
The chili oil splashed on my sweatpants and permanently stained them like some kind of demonic tie-dye. We were laughing so hard, tears streaming, and my friend, the genius that he is, wiped his face and got some in his eye.
He basically seasoned his cornea.
And the worst part? No one believes me when I say this, but the chili oil stained the glass table. I’ve never seen a liquid bully furniture before.
All in all: 10/10.
Ramen was amazing.
Would recommend if you have insurance.
We ordered a lot on our first time and we enjoyed the food, the drinks, the desert, they all taste amazing! Although they got my ramen order wrong (chicken instead of pork tonkatsu) I decided to eat it and still enjoyed the food, I’ll try the miso tonkatsu when come back, because will definitely will! Thanks for the amazing experience.
