One of the more authentic Chinese restaurants in Boston. Great atmosphere with nice decor which isn’t that common with Asian restaurants. The food was authentic and the variety is great. I was told that they change up their menu so I’m looking forward to coming back to try new things. Overall I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend.

Trying to find a translation of the restaurant’s name Xiang Yu yielded yet more mystery regarding the origin of the incredible dishes served here. “Xiang” translates to “spicy” or “savory” (both applicable here) or having to do with a region (another name for Hunan cuisine), but Xiang Yu seems to have many meanings depending on the dialect and context. One is a rebel General who overthrew the Qin dynasty in rhe 3rd century BC; another is “salted fish,” which didn’t seem applicable to our profoundly excellent Fish Fillets with Pickle soup; and another is Cantonese slang for “dead body,” which absolutely doesn’t apply here (unless that’s another mystery about the history of the place 🙂
This is a mid-priced restaurant with supremely excellent food. The Beef Lo Mein’s beef is tender, as if slow-cooked to the point of “floopiness” (our word to convey meat that’s spoon-tender and kind of jiggles on the carving board). So many noodle joints around Boston have really tough, borderline indible beef when they feature it. The Lo Mein’s sauce had that wok-seared flavor you find in better Chinese restaurants, with a nice array of vegetables nested within it.
The cucumber pickles were incredibly flavorful, loaded with diced garlic and small slices of hot pepper.
Although we’re usually “budget gourmet”-type diners, we’re putting this gem into our rotation.
Living across from TD Garden, it’s also an excuse for a nice long walk to and fro, getting in 20.000 steps in the process.
Highly recommended.

Authentic food, great atmosphere. I would rank this place second to the Hunan restaurant in Cleveland circle but it has some star dishes. The salted egg eggplant and dry ribs were excellent. Pickled beans with chicken gizzard is my favorite. Minor complaint is that food was not spicy enough for me (but will be plenty for non Hunan folks)

Food
This is my favorite Chinese (Hunan) restaurant in Boston area and I’ve come here multiple times even since I found it. Also, I haven’t been to any other Hunan restaurants in Boston ever since. The food is phenomenal. Our must orders are scallion pancake with braised beef, spicy chicken wings, spicy diced chicken, and cabbage dry pot. They have a seasonal lamb dish (滋补羊肉煲) that has become my go-to as well.

Everything else
The service is very good comparing to all other Chinese restaurants. The surprising thing is the waitresses seem to be able to speak English, mandarin and Cantonese. The decor is very classy as well.

We came to XYCB in search of a “different Chinese cuisine.” I’m told there are distinct branches of Chinese cuisine, and this place features one that we don’t get exposure to. The decor can be considered “fancy,” but that may not justify the higher prices. Food was presented well and taste was okay. We tried to order dishes that were specialties. Pork belly, chicken clay pot, whole fish, sauteed greens with shiitakes, xiao long bao – nothing was bad but it didn’t strike me as particularly memorable. Worth a visit for those who really know their Chinese food.

After picking up my friend at the hotel by the Havard Medical area, we were looking for something for a quick bite before heading to the Wrentham outlet mall. I didn’t realize until we got there and saw the restaurant was just across the street from my hotel. It’s like, what? We are back to where we were before lol But I’m glad we did. The food and service were excellent.

A decent authentic Chinese experience. I would just advise you all to avoid the Chongqing chili chicken as there is literally no chicken in them. You’ll only be eating fried dough. The potato noodles were delicious and the dumpling are fantastic!! After coming back from China it’s alright

I’m Chinese and this is the worst Chinese takeout I ever had from this restaurant! I ordered 7 dishes from this restaurant for takeout and half of them are not tasting and the rest are in really bad quality and I throw them in trash bin immediately when I first taste them. I also got diarrhea afterwards.

Please do not go unless you want to taste some unauthentic Chinese food or potentially get illness!
