Looks like great potential. However my first visit was disappointing. I was the only patron there and simply got a beer unsure of kitchen quality. Neither the bartender nor the manager bothered to be engaging. When you don’t feel welcome, you leave. Also it’s not really a steakhouse since they don’t offer prime steak. The menu looks cool though.

The only reason this deserves any star at all is because the Chef of the restaurant is the only one doing his job. The food was great, tasted good, and was served with a nice presentation. The management, the service, and the customer service response to a multitude of issues was one of the worst ever!! If you are looking for a nice dinner out, pick somewhere else to spend your money.
The issues ranged from the waiter asking us to order an expensive wine by the number – he didn’t want to be bothered with the name of the wine, getting one of our cocktails spilled on the table with no help to clean it up, the wrong appetizer being served, as we ordered (and all adults ordered filet) the waiter said, “Ohh, I like this table!” referencing how big his tip would be, getting two main entrees cooked completely wrong and had to return to be cooked again, and then to end the evening… the bill had the wrong appetizer charger to us, as well as a 20% gratuity since we had 6 people dining. Did I mention 2 out of the 6 were kids – one under 7 and one under 3!!! When questioned, the waiter said it was their policy. Maybe if the meal was correct with no issues but with all of those issues, you are then going to get a 20% gratuity tip, just because!!! At the end, we went to speak to the manager on duty and the only customer service we got was an “I’m sorry.” Goodbye Wrights… We will not be returning. You have a lot of work to do…
*Note – some reviews may be from over a year ago when this was a very nice steakhouse. This is NOT the same place now. Not as nice and a more casual menu and feel. I would pay attention to reviews from the last 6 months as this place has drastically changed.

As frequent patrons of Gabrielle’s, as well as Jonathan Rapp’s River Tavern, my mum and I were excited to try out the latest addition to the Essex restaurant scene. Overall we had a very enjoyable evening with delightful service and delicious food.

I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars due to the fact that there were quite a few aspects that felt unfinished – as if the restaurant had been pushed to open earlier than they were actually ready to.

The Good: We were seated immediately for our 6pm reservation by friendly staff. Our server was gracious and professional and both appetizer and entrees came out quickly. We shared the spinach salad to start followed by filet mignon, roast chicken breast wrapped with prosciutto and potato au gratin. The salad was delicious – fresh green spinach leaves dressed with a light hand, punctuated by the right amount of salty blue cheese, crunchy croutons, generous chunks of bacon and delicate slivers of pickled red onion. The meats were cooked perfectly, their accompanying sauces demonstrated the kitchen’s and the potato au gratin was done to perfection. Even though everything tasted so good we could have eaten it again, the portion sizes were ideal. The wine list was good, reasonably priced and the wines we ordered were lovely. The bar area is inviting and attractively designed with nice lighting and ample seating.

The Bad: The bar has not worked out how to send out drinks in as timely a manner as diners might want. They only bring out bread if you ask for it (which I did only because I saw the table next to us munching on some dinner rolls). The bread was delivered without oil or butter and it basically inedible: dry, dense, and hard. While perusing the menu we asked several questions of our server, which she honestly said she couldn’t answer because the restaurant opened without the staff having had a chance to taste the menu.

Lastly, the decor seemed bizarrely sparse and unfinished. Various electrical cords were dangling noticeably from the ceiling, and the walls, while painted a rich red, are totally bare. There are large swathes of unused space at the front and the back of the restaurant that beg for features that add warmth and character to a space filled with hard wood and cold, metal features.

The Ugly: There is a huge, beautiful greenhouse behind the restaurant that the previous restaurant used to grow their own greens. Sadly, Wright’s has made this an eyesore by filling it with restaurant supplies. Moreover, it seems like a wasted opportunity to make good on their mission to “use local ingredients wherever possible” 🙂

All in all, great start Wright’s! I would take perfect food and service with unfinished decor and details over the reverse any day! I can’t wait to come back in a few months once the kinks are worked out.

River Tavern has been our favorite restaurant since it opened 15 years ago, so we had great expectations when Jonathon Rapp opened Wright’s Steakhouse in Centerbrook. We have since eaten there three times and are pleased to say that it lives up to our high expectations. Without question the best steaks around! The decor, service and food were first rate together with an impressive wine list. The complete and very tasteful transformation of what was once Gabrielle’s restaurant is in itself worth the visit.

No star. I went there for lunch with a friend who was in town making a sales call to a local business. I suggested we try Wrights. We both had ordered the Caesar Salad with chicken breast and two non-alcoholic beverages.
The salads came and they were a nice size with fresh lettuce and sliced Parmesan cheese, however the chicken still had the some skin on it and was a dark color with a wet oily coating. When the waitress returned to the table to ask how everything was we asked about the type of chicken in the salad. As suspected, it was chicken thigh with a coating of oil and spices. We both told her it was not what we were expecting when ordered and she replied ” oh, don’t you like it? I think the chicken thigh has so much more flavor than the breast.” I said no, and disagreed. She walked away.
My friend and I looked at each other “what just happened?”. No explanation, no apology. We both finished eating the lettuce of the salad and left the chicken in the bowl. She came back to the to ask, “if we wanted it wrapped up?” NO. The bill was over $50. Needless to say, I will never go there again, or suggest anyone go there to eat!

Appetizers were awesome….entrees were far from impressive. Filet was charred and came out more medium than rare. Presentation was less than impressive.

Great atmosphere and service. A few small improvements would have changed everything.

First problem we had when we arrived is the handicap ramp wasn’t available and I mentioned it to the hostess when I made my reservation that I was coming with my 94 year old mother with a walker. We were seated at a table with 2 chairs on one side and a rickety wooden bench on the other. Appetizer ordered were steak tartar & the arthichoke dip. Well the Steak Tartar lacked flavor and body. Looked like ground meat. The Artichoke dip was good but the crostinis were very over done and uneatible. The waitress struggled opening my wine and broke the cork. We sat in the corner behind the bar. Very loud area to sit in. Bartender just tosses the dishes into the tub behind the bar which startled us more than once. There was a long lag in between appetizer & dinner. For my main meal I ordered a 8oz filet MEd rare and I left half of it on the plate. This is the first time ever I just didn’t want to finish a small 8oz filet. Lamb chops were good. Fries were good. Steak frites was chewy. We were looking forward to trying their dessert but by now we were just so disappointed with our evening that we chose to go somewhere else for dessert.

All 4 items ordered were inedible. The artichoke dip tasted as if you were biting into a browned lemon. Fish sandwich was smothered in sweet pickles and pickled onion and giant heirloom tomato (that had black rotten spots ). Pulled pork sandwich that was so wet, the bun could not make it for the first bite. The cesar salad was like biting into a clove of garlic. The flavor pairings were so off. Not only in over use, but in acidity overuse and bad balancing. I do not write bad reviews because of the damage they can cause a local business, but this experience was so terrible that I felt the need to warn others to take their date night somewhere else. We wasted our only day off on this place, don’t make the same mistake!

We had a great dinner. The food has always been good, now the atmosphere is better. My shrimp tacos were great. Margarita was tasty.

Came for lunch, celebrating end of summer. Started with calamari, tender, crisp with squid aloe. Definitely coming back for more. Lunches Seafood pasta, loaded with calamari, scallops, steamers and shrimp. The shrimp we’re well done. But… there rest of the seafood was cooked to perfection. BBQ ribs were in a good sauce not to sweet. This coming from a master BBQer, with french fries and cole slaw, the slaw was fresh, crunchy. Lunch wasn’t busy. This is a great place.
