In the area to attend a convention and we wanted to eat somewhere that was local not a chain restaurant. We found this hidden gem online and the menu sounded delicious! We arrived after 8pm and had to wait for the hostess to come back to her station. (The waitstaff had to go hunt her down once they saw we were just standing there.) No reservation, but they had plenty of tables available (shocking to us since it’s a Friday night.) Our waitress, Jennifer, was so very friendly and professional. She kept my husband’s drink filled throughout our stay. They have sparkling spring water available, so I ordered that. My Crab & Shrimp on gluten-free spaghetti with white wine sauce was so delicious I was literally sad when it was all gone. My husband loved his chicken parmigiana and topped his meal off with a slice of lemon cake for dessert. Light and delicious. Excellent choices on the menu! So happy to see a gluten free pasta option. A great place for a group dinner or a romantic dinner date. We definitely recommend Wooden Nickle!

Delicious food and excellent service! It was my mom’s birthday and she said that we could not have picked a better place for the day. We sampled a good few of their appetizers and were definitely satisfied! Once our main courses came out, we had to pack most of it because the appetizers were so delicious and filling!

We were blown away and pleasantly surprised of this wonderful fine dining establishment. Wondering why we never stopped here sooner.

We are so happy with our experience.

Fish dishes were presented with artistic talent and care. Food tasted equally amazing. Ambiance was very romantic and intimate as we were seated directly in front of the fireplace for our visit. Hostess and wait staff friendly, attentive and professional.

There was a small volume of free parking available in the rear of the building and some additional a few steps away. We will definitely come back.

The service was quick and good was seated easy for lunch the atmosphere was nice had old 70s-80s music playing.

Clean wise it’s decent…

Food was okay app was better than the main meal the bread was also better than the main meal.

Could use a little more seasoning on the food wasn’t horrible.

Meatloaf wasn’t good would revamp it.

the lobster in the pasta was very little could use more the pasta itself was just okay I wouldn’t get it again.

First time here would try it again but definitely give it a 5.6 out of 10

I went here for dinner while on a work trip and I loved the ambience and the food was very good! The prices for the food weren’t too expensive. I only spent $43 and I was able to purchase an espresso martini, calamari as an appetizer, and my main entree with a salad. The complimentary bread and butter was very flavorful as well. If I’m ever in the Pittsburgh or Monroeville area again, I’ll definitely be coming back!

My Husband and I took my elderly mother out to eat at this high end restaurant for thanksgiving and we left extremely disappointed. The proportion size for the $27.99 for a Turkey meal was simply child like. They did not allow you to have a choice of vegetables instead you had to be satisfied with some form of zucchini vegetable which my husband doesn’t eat. So he had to disregard his vegetables altogether. The stuffing size looked like a small Childs portion that may have been served with a small cookie scoop. They gave you no option for the cost to choose from an appetizer or a desert. We ordered two slices Pumpkin cheese cake for my Mother and myself which they charged $9.00 and the slices weren’t that big. My husband decided after his meal to take a slice of Pumpkin cheese cake home and ordered another piece to go and the size of the piece that they charged us $9.00 for was even smaller than the size we had for dinner. The total cost of the meal with tip came to $140.00 which was simply horrible. My husband was still hungry when we got home so I had to cook him another meal to satisfy him on Thanksgiving. He took me out to treat me for thanksgiving and I had to end up cooking for him when we returned home. This was the first time we had eaten at this restaurant and it will be our last. Simply not impressed! would not recommend to anyone for a holiday meal.

The place was nice clean and had a nice atmosphere just the right amount of light. Quaint and inviting dining experience. The wait staff was very nice and efficient. It was a nice place and they had a nice room to have our work dinner party.

I’ve lived in Monroeville my whole life and have known about the Wooden Nickle the entire time. I went there once in my early 20s and recall having a decent meal there, but I’ve never been back because of the prices.

Flash forward 20 years and my wife and I needed to find a restaurant open earlier than usual for one of our ritzy nights on the town. We usually go to the likes of Meat and Potatoes, Gi Jin, or other places downtown, but decided to finally give the Wooden Nickle a try.

We arrived to the staff huddled and chatting at the door. The snow was particularly bad and the restaurant was fairly empty. The wait staff were super cheerful and bright and were by far the best part of our experience. Unfortunately, from there it goes downhill.

The ambiance is dated. It has the feel of “we used to be a big thing” but it now reads “we’re trying to hold onto what we once were”. If you don’t mind that kind of ambiance, that’s fine, but it’s tired and cliche.

We were pressed for time so we didn’t order an appetizer. My wife ordered the Seared Scallops with Parmesan risotto and I order the Veal Parmesan. The menu had some nice sounding options, but you can’t find to many places still doing a veal parm. Locally the options are Esta Esta and Olives and Peppers. Only the latter is worth mentioning and it’s still only par at best.

The veal parm itself was decent. A little overcooked, but overall not bad. The sauce and pasta, though, were sub par. Clearly dried pasta, which, for the price, you’d expected something fresh made. I’ve had better pasta and sauce at the Eat n’ Park next door.

As disappointing as my meal was, my wife’s was so much worse. The scallops were salted beyond reason and cooked well past what a scallop should be. They actually reached that texture where the protein is just breaking into flakes as you chew. The worst scallops I’ve ever eaten. That includes my first attempts at learning how to cook them myself and failing miserably. There’s no excuses for a restaurant charging these prices to serve for like that.

The risotto was so much worse. If you’ve had real risotto, you know these is a texture to the rice that is essential to being a true risotto. That’s in addition to the type of rice it needs to be.

At the absolute best, this was overcooked cheesy rice with the texture of mashed potatoes.

We didn’t stay for dessert. I’m glad we skipped the appetizer. And I won’t be going back. You can get dramatically better versions of these meals almost anywhere else, but most especially at a real top tier restaurant. You’re better off eating anywhere else in Monroeville and saving your money. No self respecting restaurant charging prices like this should serve food this bad.

The staff though deserves a second shout out. They were cheerful, polite, and timely. Everything else was a miss.

New Years Eve. It was overcrowded and our group was seated at a long table so there was no way to socialize. Prime rib was overcooked and fatty. Pasta dish not as described (pieces of chicken nuggets thrown in instead of blackened chicken breast) and sauce not flavorful. Menu very limited for the holiday and not available in advance. My last time there.
