Went on grand opening and the macarons were very good. Service was very kind and helpful. The space is super small so I recommend bringing it home.

In the two days since it opened, I’ve tried three different restaurants at Wonder in Friendship Heights. Despite its unique business model—and terrific convenience—I’m not sure this place will survive.

Tejas Barbecue:
I don’t mind paying 20 bucks for a sandwich—but I do mind paying 20 bucks for this thing (see pics). I’m not sure how to reconcile the pastrami sandwich I received with what they advertise. The few pieces of pastrami were actually moist, but they lay between two pieces of stale, untoasted, utterly texture-less rye bread with a scant dash of mustard spread. Really?

Alanza Pizza:
Wonder includes three pizza places, which is one cuisine the area doesn’t need. But hey, perhaps one of them is better than Pete’s, Ledos, Potomac, Angelico, El Jefe, and so on. I tried Alanza’s vodka pizza, and though the sauce and mozzarella were indeed rich and creamy (potential!), the dough was so soft and textureless as to render the whole thing flaccid. I don’t care what you put on dough like this, it ain’t gonna work.

Chios Taverna:
I tried the little meatballs, spanakopita and grape leaves. All fine, but not fireworks. And again, all had that same squishy (microwaved?) texture. As Mediterranean food goes, nearby Tatte is more bold and fresh.
