Wintzell’s Oyster House

  4.5 – 3 reviews  $$ • Seafood restaurant

Founded as a six-stool oyster bar in 1938, Wintzell’s Oyster House celebrates over 80 years as a dining landmark. While oysters—fried, stewed and nude—headline the iconic brand, Wintzell’s menu comprises signature seafood dishes like bacon wrapped shrimp and redfish bienville; regional favorites, including award-winning seafood gumbo and homemade bread pudding; and two specialties native to Mobile: West Indies salad and fried crab claws. With locations throughout the Mobile area, the walls of all Wintzell’s restaurants are covered with thousands of the founder’s homespun sayings, delivering an atmosphere that’s lively, casual and unmistakably southern. After 80 years, we’re still shuck’n!

Informal chain eatery serving oysters, fried shrimp & other Gulf Coast seafood, plus happy hour.

Enjoyed a Sunday lunch on our way to a nearby Costco. Food was great. Service was at just the right speed. Oyster Sampler was an awesome way to try several types of oysters. The Carribean Margarita Marcus provided friendly and consistent service. Parking was easy. Men’s room was cramped though. Regardless, I’ll be back!

On the recommendation of the hotel staff we had to check this place out. I was with my work crew and we were all wanting to try the oysters. And they did NOT disappoint! The food is absolutely amazing! Usually I don’t expect both quantity and quality but you get plenty of both! And the ratio of shrimp to pasta was the highest I’ve EVER seen in any kind of “Cajun pasta”/ “seafood pasta,” etc. The only reason I’m not giving them 5 stars is because our waitress didn’t exactly have the best communication skills. She kept our glasses full, but when we told her we were splitting the appetizer and the rest were separate she combined two of our tickets instead of the one appetizer. Will definitely visit the other locations to see how they compare.

I can’t say enough good things about this place!! The atmosphere has a fun, dollars on the wall, Florabama vibe. Our server, Rachael, was amazing, attentive and friendly! The food was the best we have had in Mobile! We started with fried pickles and a half dozen oysters that were covered in shrimp and crawfish sauce. Both items were fresh and delicious! Thanks to Rachael’s recommendation we ordered the redfish bienville (to share) as our meal and my husband said “this is the best seafood dish I’ve ever had (and he has eaten a LOT of seafood throughout the years). It came with 2 sides, so he got the fried okra and I got the house salad. Let me just say, I am a ranch dressing connoisseur, and their ranch is top notch! I also got a cup of gumbo, which was served hot and had the perfect amount of spice. My oldest daughter got a fried chicken salad with ranch, which was fresh and incredibly tasty. My youngest got the fried shrimp meal which was just as fresh and tasty. We ended the meal with a piece of Key Lime pie, which tasted just like it came from Key West (and I should know, I was just there less than 2 weeks ago)! Needless to say this was a 5 star experience, no matter how you look at it, and we all left feeling fat and happy! We will definitely be back!

Loved this place. I didn’t try other options in Mobile, AL for oysters and seafood but this was great. Loved the atmosphere. They seem to be understaffed but just as many other places. However the server brought us a free appetizer because the order was taking longer. Would go back for sure.

Tawonda!!! These fried green tomatoes with crawfish sauce undid me! We also had the chargrilled oysters and their famous gumbo. Delicious all the way around. I’d eat those tomatoes every week if I lived near by.

Being a staple of Mobile, Wintzell’s is a must for some quality seafood! Came for lunch today. Had grilled oysters for an appetizer and they didn’t disappoint. Highly recommend. I could have eaten another dozen myself. I had the shrimp salad with ranch and it hit the spot! The people I was with had the redfish over rice. They all enjoyed it as well. Come check them out!

My dad told he me took mom here on their first date in the 1970s so when I visited I had to stop in. Food was incredible. I’ve never seen so much quality seafood for such a great price. No wonder they’ve been married for 50 years.

If you’re a local you know about this place, we found on our road trip and we’re glad we did. We sat at the oyster bar, the two guys working the bar were awesome, they’re amazing at schucking the oysters. I had half dozen of the wild caught oysters, as opposed to the farm raised variety. The were the largest oysters I ever had and they were amazing. I had the fried shrimp lunch and my wife had the white fish tacos, both were very good as evidence by nothing left on our plates! If you’re nearby make sure to stop at Wintzells.
