Social Profile:

In 1799, the Moravian Church built a bakery with a living area for the baker and his family. In 1807, a Swiss-born baker named Christian Winkler bought the bakery. Brother Winkler, his wife Elizabeth, and their six children would live and work in this house for the rest of their lives. Winkler descendants resided and worked in the bakery for generations afterward, until 1926. The Bakery’s oven is still heated with wood as it was nearly 200 years ago.

This is a beautiful places inside but I would not come here for the baked goods. The history is amazing tho. Upstairs is like a museum.

The bread is not even cooked here anymore.
The sugar cake is on the dry side
The cherry strudel was actually pretty good.

It’s been a while since visiting Old Salem and Winkler Bakery. It was a beautiful day to walk around Old Salem and visit some of the businesses. Winkler Bakery has a nice selection of merchandise! The staff were friendly and helpful! Looking forward to coming back.

If you are visiting Winston-Salem, stop by Old Salem and tour the museum and historic homes (you will need to purchase a ticket) as well as Winkler Bakery and a couple other businesses.

I stopped into Winkler Bakery—the historic, delicious-smelling gem of Old Salem—to pick up some chocolate chip cookies for Santa. You know… being a responsible adult, spreading holiday cheer, doing my duty as a contributing member of Christmas society.

But the moment I walked in, that warm bakery aroma hit me like a sugary freight train. I swear one of the cookies whispered,
“Come closer… Santa doesn’t need all of us…”

These chocolate chip cookies aren’t just cookies.
They’re fresh-baked hypnotic discs of joy.
They’re so good Santa might skip the rest of his route, sit on the roof, and eat them all while updating his résumé because nothing he delivers will taste this good.

I bought a bag for Santa—and somehow a second “mysterious” bag appeared in my hands for quality control purposes.
I took one bite and suddenly understood why elves sing all the time.
These cookies are soft, warm, chocolate-loaded miracles capable of stopping arguments, healing trauma, and possibly reviving the extinct dodo bird.

If Santa doesn’t show up at your house this year, it’s probably because he’s still parked at Winkler Bakery going back for seconds.

Winkler Bakery—keep baking that holiday hypnosis.
Santa approves.
I approve.
And my second bag of cookies definitely approves.

Love this bakery. It is an annual stop for me to buy: cookies, muffins, sweet love buns and cranberry loaf. I always add a strudel as well. Everyone is so friendly & helpful.

Stepping into Winkler Bakery felt like visiting a piece of living history. The aroma of wood-fired Moravian sugar cake and paper-thin spice cookies is irresistible. I loved watching bakers in period dress fire up the 200‑year‑old brick oven and chatting with the staff over warm treats—truly magical and unforgettable!

I had such a pleasant experience for my first time as an adult here. We were immediately greeted, told about the history of the house and its original functionality and how it was evolved over time. The woman who greeted us gave us direction of how to walk through the two floors and where the baked goods, kitchen, and gift shop were located without me having to ask any questions. Additionally, she gave me one of the sweetest, most unique compliments I’ve ever received. I was so touched by her words that I forgot to ask her name but thank you so much- your words meant more to me than you know. 🙂

My son and I went to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where one of the Winkler’s related to me from Switzerland settled there and his church sponsored him with Winkler’s Bakery where his family operated for hundreds of years. Even today, the same beehive oven is used to bake with the same recipes that Cristian Winkler brought from Switzerland in Europe. We bought bread, cookies and cakes that were baked in this oven. We looked over the houses that the Mennonites owned in the town. They had a tavern, shoemaker and other shops in the old Mennonite style. Sister Deborah who was very informative about the Winkler family there. I had an excellant experience, it was like a step into history. Thank you very much!!

The bakery and all of Old Salem is well worth a visit. There are two options for tickets. $20 gets you in to two buildings and $30 gets you in to all 11 buildings. I didn’t think I would find it that informative since I’ve been to other pioneer-like villages, but I was very impressed as the Moravian culture is different, and I learned a lot. If you don’t have time/money, you can also just walk around the town and not enter any of the buildings that have interpreters. We were there in March and it was very quiet and easy to park. The bakery is known for its sugar cookies and traditional sugar cake. Yummy!

This was the cutest historical bakery! You HAVE to try the peanut brittle, it was above and beyond delicious! It’s set in its old German heritage, which is absolutely adorable. This part of historic down town Winston Salam is absolutely the cutest place, and a must see and visit!

Really not what I expected. I was thinking it would be a sit down type bakery for some coffee and breakfast. Cool place to stop in for the history but I left empty handed and went to a different coffee shop
