Had dinner here this past Sunday. The food was excellent. The elk chops and veal were perfection. The butternut squash soup was delicious and very tasty. Great service and wonderful wine selection.

During our stay at the Skytop Lodge we had two breakfasts and two dinners in the Windsor room. One breakfast was on the weekend and was a buffet, one we ordered from the menu. Both were great. The buffet was much above average. We had huevos rancheros, potatoes, sausage, smoked salmon, and fresh fruit. The morning we ordered from the menu we had the caprese omelet and the South porch breakfast. The omelet was a little over cooked, but that’s being picky. The flavors were well balanced. For dinners we had the duck duo, pork prime rib, rack of elk, and short rib pappardelle. Words cannot describe how these meals were prepared, the flavors, fats, acids, and spices were all balanced and the presentations were perfect. For appetizers we had the mussels, bison chorizo crostini, and the crab stuffed mushrooms. Again all of the flavors were outstanding. We had no dishes that we didn’t like.

Went for breakfast, dinner, and buffet dinner (thanksgiving dinner). Breakfast buffet was better last year, now its similar to what you would find at a hilton hotel. Regular dinner was great, I recommend the octopus and their bread pudding dessert. Thanksgiving dinner was great, plenty of options and the spread was great.

We enjoyed the complimentary hot breakfast during our stay. Their hashbrown potatoes were a highlight: crunchy and perfectly seasoned. The portions were ample. Service was friendly and attentive.

We went for the valentine’s day special menu, the food was excellent but unfortunately we had a horrible server, Terry, who made the entire experience very underwhelming. never once did she check on us or ask how everything was. between the bartender, the server’s assistant and and manager, they were basically doing all the work. it was not a busy night there were about 6 tables there including us and her service was terrible. not a personable person by any means and we were just another table she had to be bothered with. brought us an incorrect bill in the end and never bothered to come back, we had to ask someone else with assistance on getting it fixed. we really enjoyed the food but it was very unfortunate to have such poor service at such a nice place.

It had been many years since I was last at Skytop, but we decided to drive there for dinner one cold winter’s night. The dining room had been renovated with new comfortable chairs, but the lights were too bring and the renovation choices made the setting, which used to feel like the first class dining room on the Titanic, feel more like being on a modern cruise ship. The real problem was when the alt rock cover band started playing in the lobby and overwhelmed the classical/light jazz that was still playing in the dining room. They finally closed the doors (though we got up twice to do so that night despite being 30-40 feet from the main door). Every time the door did open it was like a wave until the doors closed and it reseeded back to a strong undertow. Don’t get me wrong I like Coldplay as much as I like Coltrane I just don’t want hear both at the same time.
The menu was not that extensive especially considering a few ingredients seem to dominate multiple dishes. The salads were good with large portions served in even larger bowls. The risotto was gluey and comprised of inconsistently cooked arborio overall lacking in depth of flavor. At $100+ per person (we didnt drink much since we were not staying over and they didnt give us an opportunity to order more) we were expecting a better experience and meal.
The staff were very friendly and attentive, but glasses (including water) were left empty on the table for a long time. It’s hard to have to write a poor review because it is clear they are trying; though it seems like they don’t know if they are trying to be an elegant dining setting or something trendy. Unfortunately trying to be both 1930s and 2020s results in it feeling more like the mid 1990s.
Where they have succeeded, is the lobby and bar which were renovated since the last visit as well, but retained the old elegance and charm with restored fireplaces, and comfortable seating. Next time I think we would just go for drinks.
