First time visitor here yesterday and I could not love this place any more than I do.
The atmosphere is down home, analog Americana. The sugar caddies don’t match from table to table (ours was a small 1970s Indiana Glass carnival glass creamer!)
The servers aren’t 21 year olds with no knowledge of old Hollywood icons and all wearing the same uniform.
The menu is diner-esque and the food — though delicious– is not prepared fast, so you get to sit and savor some conversation and the authentic small town feel of this quaint and charming little gem along the railroad tracks.
Tip: park in the back if there’s spots or reverse in if parking up front and traffic allows. Being right on the highway makes it a bit tough to back out into traffic on busy weekends.
Getting there was tricky. The pretty voice from my phone sent me down one narrow road after another. It even told me to make a sharp left turn at an intersection that was clearly marked with a no left turn sign. So, it took some improvising and rerouting to get there.
There was room in the parking lot, including a space right out front. I took the space and hurried in. Despite the crowd inside, the family in front of me was assured that the wait wouldn’t be long and I was offered a small table right away. There were only two people working the crowded dining room, so it took a minute to get a menu and the promise of coffee. By the time the coffee got to me, I had picked the chicken fried steak.
The woman who took my order was also the hostess. Her duties kept her so busy that she had to be very efficient with her questions about how my eggs should be prepared and what kind of toast I wanted. She wrote down my order, attended to some hostess duties, poured some coffee and finally put my order in. I spent the waiting time sipping the very strong coffee and scrolling around on my phone.
The plate that arrived looked good. The toast had a generous smear of butter, the hashbrowns were crispy and the eggs were perfectly poached. Everything needed a shot of salt for my taste, but I use more salt than most people. The gravy on the chicken fried steak was thick and peppery. I gobbled up the food, enjoying every bite.
I got a final pour of coffee to pass the time while I waited for someone to pick up my credit card. Prices these days are crazy, so $26 including tip was not too unusual. I signed the slip and got back on the road. Google took me on a different route to get back to I5. It took a while, but there were no illegal turns to get back to my merry Christmas travel.
The menu is somewhat limited but I like what they have to offer so no complaints there! And Maybe next time I’ll try to remember to take a photo of my breakfast before devouring it 🙂 My go to order for breakfast here is The Firehouse, it’s essentially scrambled eggs with sausage topped with delicious hollandaise sauce. With a side of perfectly cooked hash browns and a bread of your choice.
If I must say something slightly negative, it would be that they don’t have an option to order a side of fruit. Also if I want something sweet I’d go for a cinnamon roll which is a meal in itself or a coffee cake. I highly recommend this place is you live in the area or visiting!
OK, nothing fancy. Breakfasts are standard fare. Eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. Pancakes are large plate sized served with real butter and warm syrup! Exit 208 off I-5 and about 3 miles west. It’s worth a visit. Some days they are very busy.
