In the 50’s and 60’s Floyd Whitt had a unique hobby of building barbecue pits. Floyd, a premier bricklayer in the Tennessee Valley, experimented with several pit designs and sauce recipes until he perfected the way barbecue is cooked in the South. Neighbors passing by and catching the aroma of the hickory-smoked meat, stopped to look, smell, and buy. Instead, Floyd and Laura, his wife, passed out samples and asked only for feedback. Laura dreamed of building a small building in their backyard — cooking and selling enough barbecue to put their four children through college, an idea that turned into a great tradition. Floyd left his bricklaying profession to open their first store on Labor Day of 1966.

I stopped by to pick up two separate large to go orders and the staff was so helpful and kind. They even helped me drag everything out to my car. Reasonably priced for a full lunch meal with sides, drink and cookie. The white chocolate macadamia cookies are so, so good.

The one in Athens they have you guys beat. I thought you were all the same. Your mustard tater salad does not compare to their tater salad. Your chicken was very dry and the ribs soso on my combo, Now my husband got the rib plate his ribs were fantastic!! Now that chocolate pie it is worth heaven.

My papaw took me to this very whitts in 1986. I’m the only member of my family to grow up outside of Alabama and I still order online. Best in the area and has been for as long as I been comin back home. White sauce extra pickles with the chips smashed boy I’m tellin u what. If you’re going there to sit down well there’s probably a crapper barrel somewhere. Long live Bear Bryant.

We are from Memphis, (the bbq capital) and nothing at home comes close to whitt’s! Every time we visit, it is a must have. Always delicious!

Stopped in and got a lunch box. This is a great deal and provided a lot of food for the price. Went to the drive thru and got our food in less than a few minutes or less. Very good food and flavor. Definitely will come again.

Ehhhh… I’ve had much better. I know this is an institution here in Alabama, but it was way less than what expected. My slab of ribs was really fatty and the outer pieces of meat where a bit hard in texture, and to top it off the membrane was still attached to it. Service was fast and efficient. I don’t think I’m ever going back.

My family’s been coming to Whitt’s BBQ since they opened their Decatur location. I ALWAYS get the pulled pork sandwich with white sauce (OF COURSE). It comes with delicious vinegar coleslaw on the sandwich. If I’m not mistaken, they used to have Golden Lays — super thin and crispy potato chips. I’m a LITTLE disappointed that they serve regular Lays potato chips these days which just aren’t as good I’m afraid. My husband and I split the lovely white chocolate macadamia cookie. Super friendly drive-thru staff, we were their last customers a few weeks ago driving back home from Florida, and the adorable server gave our tired dog a little nibble of pulled pork! How precious! Now THAT’s friendly service.

Whitt’s is the best. Every time I’m home in Alabama I have to stop here for a loaded potato and a pork sandwich box.

Always good! I love the lunchbox special! You get a sandwich, two sides, a cookie and a drink for about $10. Whitt’s has been around for a very long time and I see why. I will continue to go get the lunch box special along with family packs, loaded potatoes and other things. All locations in Alabama and Tennessee have been great. Food has always been consistent.
