We are a cute little cafe that started out as Charlson’s White Grocery Store and at the same site built a filling station. Which closed and became a hoars. use and in no time at all became Berlin’s Coffee Shop with a couple chairs, a table and a counter. The coffee shop and restaurant seated 26 people and Berlin’s residence was in the back, they also had standard gas pumps, eventually the restaurant became Berlin’s Cafe in 196, they added on with a barber shop filling station and cafe and owned it for 26 years. Their have been many more owners throughout the years. We would love to have you as our guest and learn more about our little cafe and the history and try our delicious entrees and desserts.

We arrived with the lunch rush on the first Friday after the start of Lent. Like most everyone else, we were there for the All You Can Eat fish fry. The two of us opted for the grandest option of All You Can Eat, which included a choice of potato, shrimp, and the salad bar.
The salad bar area is small and rather crammed to the side of a back dining room, but it absolutely delighted me. There were rolls and butter pats, and a whole array of salads that felt like the same mix you’d find at a great Midwest potluck. I sampled several, but I absolutely LOVED the broccoli bacon salad and the Snickers salad! My husband opted for the simple lettuce salad with croutons.
Service was consistently slow during our visit, just as a matter of timing–they looked short-staffed during the lunch rush, and the workers were being run off their feet! They were moving nonstop.
I had broiled fish with shrimp and a baked potato. Perfectly cooked, flavorful fish. I loved the breading on the shrimp. I had butter and sour cream along with my potato. I didn’t get seconds.
My husband had the standard fried fish, shrimp, and fries, and really enjoyed them, and he did request a few more pieces of fish. They came out, piping hot.
I want to come back here sometime and try the pie!

Looking for diner or home cooked food, this is a great place to stop. I was with a few other friends, we stopped on a Sunday late morning, we had burgers and one in our group had a breakfast burrito. Everything was delicious. The bun on the burger was toasted to perfection. We saw the turkey dinner special being delivered to several tables and it looked amazing. Check in out if you are near Red Wing

We stopped by the Whistle Stop Cafe along the way to Frontenac State Park smack dab in the middle of the Sunday rush – each table was completely filled, with several people already waiting when we arrived. This may seem a nightmare to some, but for us, it was a sign we had picked the right place. Business like that generally indicates a place worth stopping, and we were not wrong. Staff were great, patient despite the chaos, and we were seated relatively quickly in the backroom of the restaurant.
We both ordered breakfast, having been craving a solid omelet our entire drive, and we didn’t regret that one bit. The omelettes were hearty, generous, and delicious, spilling out their contents from a bursting egg exterior. The coffee was FANTASTIC, piping hot and so darn good I can taste it even now.
I hope some day, I can live a life where I am able to visit such a wonderful place regularly and with familiarity.

Typical diner / cafe. Friday fish / shrimp fry was terrific and is done all day Friday. I really liked how the shrimp were battered. Came with choice of potato and I did the baked potato with butter and sour creme. Comes with salad bar, which was smaller though sufficient.
Note that they bring the fish and shrimp to you and if you want more just ask and they bring more out fresh, which was fine.
They brought a huge plate of shrimp last time I asked for a reorder. It’s still terrific.

Always a stop for us. The service is a bit sassy and very friendly. The food is good old home cooking, reasonably priced, comes out fast and hot. Definitely recommend!

I ordered the special of the day, something I’d never had before called Porcupine meatballs. My meal was comforting and filling. I’d visit again on the account of the service alone, the waitress (sorry I can’t recall her name but she had short brownish hair and glasses) was so nice. She shared with us a few places up the highway we should visit. Her friendliness was so appreciated and genuine.
If you want good food, something like your grandma would make, and great service, I’d say give them a try!

I remember stopping here with my Grandparents, c. 1975. I don’t think that much has changed, which I love. I had a seat near the front window and I could watch vehicles coming down US HWY 61. A train went by too, along with The Empire Builder en route to Chicago. I had a wonderful breakfast. And speaking of 1975, this place does not accept cards. But there is an ATM on site that will charge you $3.00 to get cash. I should have stopped at a Kwik Trip and gotten cash for free on my CC. It always bothers me when places do this.

Very nice interior, got myself some steak and eggs, they were amazing although the steak was kind of bland so I just added some salt after that it was amazing. Would definitely recommend going here if your looking for a great breakfast place

Atmosphere and service were top notch. Waitress was very friendly even though she was super busy. Salad bar had a great variety of salads; pasta, lettuce, fruit types and even pickled herring. My liver and onions were perfect with a large portion. The hubby’s cheese burger was delicious and he liked the spiced fries that came with. Sadly the peach pie had good flavor but the crust was not fully cooked; soggy? The lemon meringue had great flavor, but the crust wasn’t quite right. I would have eaten all of it if I wasn’t stuffed from the liver.
