Atmosphere and Seating:
The restaurant was busy when we arrived, but fortunately, we were seated within five minutes. A large group of 10 to 12 people arrived immediately afterward. Luckily, the staff was able to accommodate them, though we had to temporarily relocate so they could reshuffle the seating arrangements.
It took a while before a server attended to us. We kept trying to make eye contact to signal we were ready to order. Most of the staff appeared to be “talking story” and not looking our way. Perhaps it was late in the evening, but they seemed checked out. When we finally did order, however, the server was helpful and tried to explain some of the menu items.
Our order arrived in good time, likely because most of the items are pre-made. Most of my family opted for the two-choice entrée plate. My selection was the brisket, pork ribs, smoked mac & cheese, smoked baked beans, and a side of pork sausage.
Overall, the food was not bad. The coffee bourbon BBQ sauce definitely helped the brisket, though I couldn’t distinctly taste the coffee flavor. The mac & cheese was really good, but surprisingly lacked a smoky flavor. Similarly, I couldn’t taste or smell any smoke in the baked beans, nor did I detect the signature kauwe wood flavor in those sides. The pork sausage was disappointingly dry.
The clear winner was the pork ribs. They were soft, juicy, and literally fell off the bone.
All in all, the food is decently priced and the taste is fine, making it a satisfactory place to satisfy a BBQ craving, but it could certainly improve on service and delivering a true smoke flavor in its side dishes.
OH and to top it off, Meggled Browned butter tres leches cake was perfection. Thank you!
However as someone from the south the food here is delicious, reasonably priced and manly sized portions.
I come here fairly regularly and will continue to do so.
This time I went with the ribs, smoked beans and smoked Mac. Was fantastic
First of all, the google pictures are of a different location all together. The building looks nothing like the one in the google reviews from years ago. It looks like an old fast food spot, complete with the drive thru window. Once inside it’s dull and dingy looking. There were people sitting around waiting for orders (that should’ve been my next clue).
Contrary to the name, there is absolutely no whisky anywhere in sight. No bar, not even bottled beers. We tried ordering three things that were “sold out”. From ordering to receiving our food it was over 30 minutes. Brisket was dry. Mac and cheese was oily, and Sweet tea tasted like the premade stuff. Even after ordering an all meat plate they only give you one sauce option in a small tin serving cup.
Servers were nice enough. Just seemed like a bunch of high school kids left alone while the parents were out. Oh, and a discount for cash purchases? What the heck?!
We will not be returning.
