I wouldn’t say the manager who took my order was friendly. She kind of seemed mad BUT our order was kind of a nightmare. Expecting someone to be really happy all the time seems unrealistic. Who knows what she has going on in her everyday life. What mattered is even though our order was complicated and demanding it came out perfect. They did a great job. It’s a fast food place so temper your expectations but it’s S teir fast food.

Tradition Meets Frustration at Whataburger

First Impressions
Whataburger has always held a nostalgic spot in our family’s heart. It’s tied to some really special memories. So when we stopped in for a casual family dinner (6 people, 6 meals…or so I thought), we were expecting comfort food and good vibes. Unfortunately, this visit took a turn.

Atmosphere & Vibe
The place itself was clean and had that familiar Whataburger energy; bright, casual, and easygoing. But the front-end experience during ordering and resolution? Let’s just say it felt less “Texas hospitality” and more “you’re the problem.”

What I Tried
Our group ordered a mix of burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, and drinks. Standard go-to meals that always hit the spot. But when our food came out, we received 7 full meals for 6 people. And while the extra food might seem like a win, it wasn’t one I wanted. Especially at ~$15 per meal in this economy.

Service & Experience
Here’s where things soured: I reviewed the order at the register before paying, specifically because it was a larger order and the cashier seemed new. So when the extra meal showed up, I asked for it to be refunded and returned.

The cashier became visibly flustered, brought over the manager, and from that point on, it felt like I was the issue. I was told the miscommunication was on my end, despite having just gone over the order moments before. The manager seemed annoyed by the request and couldn’t process a refund for the single meal. Instead, she refunded the entire $100+ order, then recharged my card for the corrected amount, causing a temporary double charge and tying up my funds.

It wasn’t just a tech hiccup, it was the tone, the dismissiveness, and how confidently they positioned the mistake as mine. I left feeling frustrated, a little embarrassed, and definitely not valued.

Pro Tips or Heads-Up
Double-check your receipt even if you just reviewed your order, apparently that’s not enough. And maybe don’t expect the management to meet you halfway if something goes wrong. Also: be prepared for a larger hold on your card if they need to reprocess your order.

Final Verdict
Whataburger still serves up a solid meal, and it’ll always be a part of our family tradition, but this location made us think twice. When customer service turns corrective instead of collaborative, it leaves a bad taste, pun fully intended. We might be back someday… just not here.

I visited the Whatabuger location at 1800 W. Elliot Road, Tempe, Arizona at noon on a Friday. The drive thru was backed up, so I went inside to order. Two guys entered right before me and they told the employee at the register that they had an app pickup, then they stepped aside. She went behind the wall and I stepped up to the counter and waited while she never returned. It seemed like a really long time, but in reality, it was probably only a minute before someone else (with a Manager badge) stepped up to the register and started taking my order and the orders of the people who were in the line forming behind me. I ordered the Green Chile Burger Meal which came with medium fries and medium drink. The total after taxes was $12.31. The manager gave me my receipt and a number tent along with an empty drink cup. I walked up the soda fountain, got ice and lemonade. I sat down at a table with my number tent and only about a minute later, a guy brought my food to me along with some ketchup for the fries. The Green Chile Double burger was hot, fresh and delicious. The green chile was tasty but not spicy. The fries were hot and fresh as well. The lobby was clean and the trash cans were ready for the lunch rush.

Everything sparkles here. First time here and employees were genuinely smiley & helpful. I like that they bring your order to your table & deliver condiments on a fully stocked tray. That spicy ketchup had a nice mild zing! Burger had plenty of lettuce, tomatoes, & pickles. The burger patty was large compared to other fast food joints where they seem to have shrunken. Very good value. Restrooms were ultra clean. The two drive thru lanes show me that they are ready to do serious business!

Went to eat for dinner on Thursday night 10/30 noticed my fries were green. When I spoke to the employee named Joann I asked her about it why my fries were green? Joann answer was yes and what? I said , ok so it’s ok that my fries are green she said yes! There’s nothing wrong with it! She rolled her eyes and walked away very rude. Another guest saw the whole thing and said to me that is exactly how she treated me when I ordered very rude!!! Poor service!!!

The girl that took the other messed up the whole order! I don’t know what she had her mind one and she forgot to give me the drinks! I told her and she argued that I didn’t order drinks I told her that I wanted to talk to the manager! Then the Manager came out ! His name is Alex ! And he apologized and fixed the order! I wish there was more managers like this! Thank You Whatabuger for hiring a Great Manager like Alex I know I will be sure to give Whataburger all my business ♥️

Nice clean and friendly service. Ordered the #1 burger combo and a cob salad with grilled chicken to try out. No disappointment here. Everything was fresh tasting and hooked up! The lobby is very nicely decorated and kept clean.
