Very over-rated. Before we visited Edisto, all of our friends said this restaurant was a “must go to” place. We did… twice actually. We thought the first time may have been because they were busy. Slow service, meh food, soup was cold and out of several things we wanted. The 2nd time, the wing chips were so done we couldn’t eat them. We ended up going to Flowers, getting our own fresh seafood and enjoyed that for alot less money. Won’t be going back here.

The steak sandwich and fried oysters were so good, we had to go back one more time before we left. Drinks were good, not watered down like in some vacation spots. Servers were great both times. We will definitely go back!

Edit: Gave Whaley’s Restaurant & Bar another try and stopped in at 4:50 just before dinner starts at 5 PM. Last time we came around 7 PM, and let me tell y’all… getting here right at the start of dinner service is definitely the way to go!

We had the same waitress as before, and she was consistently amazing once again attentive, friendly, and on top of everything.

Drinks and food came out smoothly, and everything was cooked to perfection. For appetizers, we had the fried cheese and sushi nachos both were delicious and full of flavor.

We shared the Round Man Platter, which came loaded with shrimp, flounder, oysters, chips, and a crab cake and it did not disappoint. Every bite was fresh, crispy, and seasoned just right.

Whaley’s totally redeemed itself and earned that 5 stars from us. We’ll definitely be back just earlier next time, for sure!

I like this place and the food is good.

If you are not a smoker or turned off by smoking and/or vaping, then know that they do not permit either in the outside seating area.

Service is good and the atmosphere is rustic Edisto.

If you are a fan of crab cakes, then I highly recommend trying the ones here!

Enjoy!!!

We came for an early dinner, and very glad we did. By 5 pm, there were a lot of people waiting. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. I felt like the staff went above and beyond to make sure their waiting patrons were seated as soon as possible. (Generally, We have discovered that this is not an area to wait until you’re hungry to go to dinner, because you’re likely going to be waiting 40 minutes to well over and hour.)
Our server was absolutely outstanding! He was funny, energetic, and attentive! Our drinks were always full. It did take a while for the food. We were so glad that we ordered appetizers. The tuna nachos and fried cheese were delicious!
All of us enjoyed our food. The BLT, fish and chips, kids burgers, smash burgers, and steak sandwich were simply wonderful!!!!!!

I also feel it’s worth mentioning that we witnessed incredible kindness towards disabled patrons. As they did with others, the staff prepared seating as soon as they could. But they also checked in with the families multiple times to make sure they had what the needed before seating them. Then, at least three staff members cleared chairs, escorted and greeted the family. It was simply heartwarming to see that level of care for their customers.

We enjoyed it so much, and the people were amazing, so why the low rating for atmosphere you might be asking? Well, it was the cleanliness and sporadic damaged chairs. Our tables were fine; but generally it was the smaller details we noticed. The front window had greasy finger prints, there were more general crumbs and dirt than what we’ve seen in other restaurants. The bathrooms were gross. Really gross. I used it as a teaching moment for the kids as to why we tell them to “go” before we leave the house. I don’t know; maybe it’s the age of the building. Maybe it was people that used it before being inconsiderate. But frankly, the smell was neauseating. I want so much for this place to continue being successful. Their food is great, staff phenomenal, but the building itself needs a lot of TLC. I would definitely go back, but after the family has used the facilities!

From Charleston, came to Edisto for the day with my parents who are visiting from Athens, GA. Restaurant is located in an old gas station which was neat. The service was slow but it seemed as though they were low staffed. The atmosphere was ok. Lots of tables in a small space, but well configured. They did have a full bar area. The bathrooms were outside and very tight. Definitely not handicap accessible. The food was fantastic! My dad said the wings were the best he’s had in a while. The rest of us got seafood. Breading was very light, stayed on the food. Cooked perfectly! Great portions. The Rounds Man’s combo is enough for 2 people easily. Next time I will probably just get the raw fries(homemade chips) instead of paying $3 for fries or grits. Although the grits were very good.

Our waitress showed us a wonderful southern charm. She was wonderful. Wish we had gotten her name
We had good drinks here, but we didn’t have any food. The atmosphere is pretty laid back.

A great place to eat with friends and family.

Food came out quick and tasted good. Wings were cooked well and we’re a good size. I liked the Spicy Teriyaki flavor. Chicken sandwich and a flounder were both so good. Fries were cooked well but they tasted fishy so that was the only thing that I didn’t enjoy about the food.

Service was great. Very friendly and quick.

Atmosphere is that of a beach dive bar. Great place to go to get that local beach experience.

FOUR STARS overall for Whaley’s Restaurant and Bar on Edisto Island, SC.
FIVE STARS for the Wee Willie’s Kid’s Menu fried flounder, onion rings, and fries—fresh, crispy, and satisfying.
THREE STARS for the adult menu’s Big Salad—a generous mix of crisp romaine, avocado, tomato, cucumber, onion, parmesan, bacon, and egg, served with homemade dressing. Unfortunately, the add-on fried oysters were a letdown: tiny, overly breaded, and a bit cool when served.
FOUR STARS for the Sushi Nachos appetizer: crispy wontons layered with pan-seared ahi tuna, avocado, Asian tomato salsa, wasabi aioli, and a teriyaki ginger glaze. The recipe was excellent, though two portions of tuna had gristle—something that should be addressed in the kitchen.
A former gas station, Whaley’s is one of Edisto’s oldest restaurants and a popular local hangout. With limited dining options on the island, Whaley’s holds a nostalgic charm—but the building, bar, bathrooms (with outdoor access), and dining area are overdue for an upgrade. Maintenance and cleanliness, especially in the restrooms, could be improved. Wait times can be excessive in peak season.
Bottom line: Despite flaws, Whaley’s earns FOUR STARS overall—thanks to its location, character, and the island’s limited competition.
