West of Orleans is exactly what I want in a restaurant. Honestly, I think they may serve the best food in Thousand Oaks.
It’s a small shop. No tables inside, just a counter to order. A menu on a TV and a pretty bare wall greets you. The chef will come out and offer you a “shot of gumbo”. Now, I haven’t been everywhere, but I am no stranger to New Orleans. And this gumbo is the best I’ve had outside of Louisiana.
The restaurant is operated by as far as I can tell, two people. The food is made with pride, heart, and care. And you can absolutely taste it in every single bite. It’s the kind of food that makes your shoulders slump when it hits your mouth.
Seriously, do yourselves a favor, if you have not been here, stop in. Looks are deceiving. Do not let the fact that everything feels “to-go” make you think the quality of the food is anything less than the best.

Small little family owned spot. Great food, fair prices, Marcus was an amazing host and super friendly. Took the time to go over the menu and explain anything if we had questions. Great to have a New Orleans style resturant near us! Gumbo, BBQ shrimp and rice and wings were amazing! Definitely coming back

Such a hidden gem that I recently discovered not only makes delicious food, but is owned by one of the nicest couples you’ll ever meet. Chef Marcus and his wife are truly sharing their passion for making delicious food. Hubs and I were offered free samples of their jerk chicken wings while waiting for our order…which BTW…were incredible! But I was here for the Shrimp Po’ Boy on grilled French bread, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact I couldn’t decide between the fried or sautéed shrimp so they made mine with both! What a delectable sandwich that was so big I could only eat half. And the homemade potato chips were also very tasty. Be sure to try the Cabbage and Kale Saute and Red Beans Rice…both I can honestly say are as good as it gets. Hubs got the Soft Shell Po’ Boy and said it was “freaking amazing” lol. Please try this restaurant, on repeat, and keep them in mind when you are planning your next event, as they do a lot of catering too.

Ordered a couple sandwiches to go. They were delicious and fresh! The chef and owner Marcus, came and introduced himself. He was warm and welcoming and even offered us some fresh made Gumbo as we were walking out the door. It was amazing!

One word…YUM!!! We keep coming back to this adorable ma and pa owned local place because it’s delicious and the owners are so nice! The Brisket Mac and cheese, jumbo shrimp, chicken gumbo, cornbread, and tri tip po boy sandwich are all incredible as those are the ones I’ve tried. I’m sure all their food is amazing! I highly recommend this place, go check it out!! 🙂

The woman who took our order was so delightful and patient since me and my partner were indecisive on what we wanted to try.
I went on to order a very savory chicken gumbo with brisket and garlic loaf to go.
My partner ordered a pulled pork po boy with a side of Mac and cheese that he really enjoyed.
The Mac and cheese was definitely homemade style with pieces of melted cheddar and pan burnt cheese.
We have both been to New Orleans and love the food and I absolutely feel that this little gem captures the essence of all Cajun. This will now become one of our regular places

The woman who helped me was really nice, she offered me a sample of seafood gumbo upon picking up my order. The seafood jambalaya was amazing and the smoked ribs were yummy. I will definitely be going back for those items.

It’s not often something new and different comes along in the Thousand Oaks culinary seen. West Of Orleans is just that, there are no substitutes for this genre of food. Marcus has created an authentic Southern dining experience that must be tried to believe. I ordered the Chicken Gumbo, Seafood Etouffée and the Black Eyed Peas. The seafood was the true star of my meal, the shrimp was plump and fresh. The flavors took me back to my childhood eating my grandmother’s Southern cooking. The next time I’m in I will be trying other options on the menu. Do not hesitate, get there now and I promise you will not be disappointed.

Most recently, I picked up a large order for a birthday party. I got shrimp mac & cheese, seafood etouffee, chicken jambalaya, red beans and rice, and three types of wings. Everything was bomb, people loved it, and the big beautiful shrimp were abundant!! Communication was really outstanding, Marcus was great to deal with and he came in on Sunday to make the food fresh and be available for pickup. Everything worked out perfectly. Highly recommend!!!

Excellent place for Cajun food! Friendly people, very good blends of flavors. Prices and portions are reasonable. If you want something different, I highly recommend them, they are a true treasure for Newbury Park.
