We had the pleasure of dining at the Wellington Gastropub in August. Our friends came in town from Halifax and we wanted to take them to a restaurant where they would enjoy delicious food in a cozy, friendly atmosphere, like they prefer back home. We found the perfect spot. We drove across town to this restaurant and we had the best experiences thanks to the friendly staff, very talented chefs in the kitchen who cooked us food we all loved, and a wonderful owner who chatted with us. The restaurant has a cozy unique decor and tables set up in a way you don’t feel as though you are sitting inches away from another table. This is a perfect spot for any occasion. They have a wide variety of incredibly delicious food options, drink options, and great prices. Its one of our favorite restaurants.

Had dinner with friends, last minute reservation for a 6-person group. Service was just attentive enough. The duck confit was very hearty and filling, scallop dish was more refreshing and the mousse was great- enough body but not too heavy.

Had to wait 30-35 minutes for meal.

The parmesan truffle fries come with little parm and no truffle.

The risotto looked and tasted like slop.

The beef short rib was a rational cut which felt like portioning and was dry served with only three carrots hidden in uncooked kale with no seasoning or dressing.

Lovely spot for dinner. Service was prompt and attentive. I had the risotto and it was tasty and filling. For dessert, I highly recommend the warm sticky toffee pudding with ice cream.

Had a wonderful celebration dinner here tonight. We ordered several smaller and one larger dish to share. We thought the presentation and flavours of the dishes were thoughtful, creative, and tasty. We really enjoyed being able to see a bit of the action of the busy kitchen and admired the chef’s focus and organization in the kitchen during dinner service. Our wait staff were friendly, attentive, and very professional.

My wife and I enjoyed a late Saturday brunch done absolutely right. Incredible food, warm hospitality, and an ambiance that invites you to slow down and enjoy every moment. Fresh, inspired dishes with beautiful presentation—but even better flavors. A true hidden gem that delivers on every level. We’ll be back.

A five star review all around. We held a bit of a complex event at the Wellington Gastropub and working with the owner, Shane Waldron, was an absolute pleasure. The communication prior to, and the execution on the day-of. This is a hidden gem, and I would highly recommend this spot.

Overall, excellent food, service and ambience.

Dinner at The Wellington Gastropub – A Disappointing Return…

The Wellington Gastropub has long been part of our regular dining rotation, a place we have come to rely on for consistently tasty, satisfying food. But after a year away, we returned tonight for a friend’s birthday celebration, and unfortunately, it didn’t live up to its former charm.

We were offered a set menu for the evening due to the size of the group. Things started off on a low note with the beet salad. It was bland, the fried halloumi was dry and just generally unremarkable.

The main course, a braised beef shortrib dish I have loved in the past and often returned for, was surprisingly disappointing. The cut was overly fatty, the dish lacked sauce leaving the meat on the dry side regardless of the fat content. The pepper crust was overpowering and overshadowed everything else on the plate. Oddly enough, the confit carrots were the highlight of that dish.

That said, my partner fared better, his smoked tomato soup was tasty, with a nice depth of flavor, and his Mariposa confit duck leg was more enjoyable than the beef.

Thankfully, dessert closed things on a higher note. The sticky toffee pudding was simple, rich, and deeply satisfying. A sweet ending to an otherwise underwhelming meal.

I have had many lovely experiences here in the past, but tonight just did not measure up. I am left wondering if the The Wellie will stay in our rotation going forward.

After an absence of several years, we discovered that the food, service, and atmosphere remain great. The draft beer offerings, though not as numerous as at some large pubs, is very well chosen (e.g., Wood Brothers).
