Wayside has been a feature of Oakboro for years. However, I have had to change this review because I don’t feel welcome anymore. Servers answering the phone sound cold in a tone like they don’t want to be there. Food is still fine, but customer service has gone downhill even for me, who has lived here over 30 years. Los Jacubes down the road understands the value of having a pleasant demeanor when talking to customers on the phone and in person, so wayside needs to fix this and go back to how I remember it being.

I order from this place a lot. Seems the waitresses are rude, the cooks can’t get it right no matter what we order. I ordered a club without mayo, lettuce and tomato and it had it all on there. The fries was super cold in every plate as if they had been sitting for a long time. Not sure what’s going on with this place but the last time I ordered I waited 30 mins in the place and didn’t even go for 25 mins after I ordered. I just spent $48 on food that my kids won’t even eat.

I’m usually really nice when it comes to reviews, but this is starting to be the “norm” when I do to-go orders from this Wayside. This incident has happened twice in the past few weeks and it always happens when Macie T is the one who answers my phone call. I order VERY specific because I know what I’ll get if I don’t. I always ask for a two egg plate scrambled with well done bacon and well done, crispy hash browns. Both times I have ordered this while she takes my order, it is like it must be going through one ear and out the other one. What I ask for is never reflected on my receipt or in the food I am given. Bacon is always flimsy and both times the hash browns have felt like they hit the grill for thirty seconds. Chewy, no color whatsoever, and incredibly hard to eat. The cooks when I entered today were two teenage looking kids who spent more time goofing off than ensuring proper food quality. They are also touching your toast and breakfast sandwiches with their bare hands today and constantly touching their clothing in between orders. We used to be such loyal customers to this location, but this happening again has turned me off from ever coming back to this location. If you can’t listen properly and deliver what your customer asks for, then perhaps this isn’t the line of work for you. How many refunds is it going to take before they finally decide to get it right?

The food was good! We had various hot sandwiches, and my patty melt was delicious! I didn’t realize they close at 8:00, and we didn’t get there until after 7:00, which I believe may be why our service wasn’t the best, and one of our party slipped and fell in front of the restroom door because they had mopped and the floor was wet but you couldn’t see it because the area in front of the door was not well-lit. They were apologetic about the accident. I am a huge fan of Wayside in Stanfield, but I can’t say I’ll go here again.

PSA: WAYSIDE IN OAKBORO IS NOT LIKE IT USED TO BE. The chicken tenders are completely different. Which is sad, considering little things like the old tenders are what set Wayside apart from other restaurants. We ordered two kid’s chicken tender plates and a cheeseburger pita.The cheeseburger pita was fresh and spot on. However, the tender plates were absolutely old, hard, and chewy. When trying to break them apart, you had to use some muscle to do so. Fries were also hard and old, and on top of all that? My 6 year old refused to eat it. I called the restaurant and whoever answered assured me they make their food “fresh” every time. Well, in my opinion it’s quite unlikely it was made “fresh” since the overall quality of our take out order was awful.

Food is good, Had a chicken salad sandwich and pot salad. Very filling. Have eaten there before. Wasn’t too busy as it was later than lunch crowd. They also do take out, Can pull up in front, to pick up. Will definitely go there again when going to Oakboro.
