We were seriously crossing our fingers all day that the power would come back on in Havre de Grace after the storm—and thank goodness it did, because our dinner at Water Street Seafood was so worth it!
We started with the crab hush puppies (yum!) and the calamari, which was super tender and perfectly crispy—not greasy at all. The cioppino was loaded with flavor and fresh seafood, the rockfish was cooked just right, and the bacon-wrapped scallops were out of this world. Oh, and do NOT skip the cream of crab soup—best we’ve had in a long time.
Great vibes, friendly service, and amazing food. Total win of a night!
When the food arrived, I asked the server who delivered it to confirm that the pasta was gluten-free. He allegedly checked with the cook and assured me it was. Later, my waiter also confirmed the same. Despite these assurances, about 30 minutes after eating, I became violently ill.
This was not just a minor mistake—it was a serious health issue that could have been avoided with proper attention to food safety.
Update for the owner: Thank you for your response. This was not a false review. I will be calling on Wednesday when you all are open.
Additional update: I’m adding pictures of my meal that I had. The Water Street Cioppino is what is in question due to being told before the meal was served and after it was served that the pasta that you see in the picture was 100% gluten free
It was my friend and I dining together, and she has a gluten allergy. We spoke with Caden after reviewing the menu and had him discuss the gluten free options with us further. He gave recommendations and we ordered.
We had a dozen oysters, a Cesar salad, and the Water Street Cioppino. I also, had the crab hush puppies. They were absolutely phenomenal. The oysters were good too. The salad was just okay. Nothing over the top special. The cioppino for me was delicious. We also got the gluten free mousse and tiramisu to go.
When they brought our food, we asked the food runner and Caden again on the gluten free. We just wanted to confirm again since they seemed nervous. They confirmed that it was gluten free and left.
Here’s where things got tricky. I do not have any food allergies and everything was great for me. However, my friend has a gluten allergy, and she either got something that had been cross contaminated or her gluten free items were not actually gluten free. Our server, Caden, did seem to stumble over us questioning him about food items. Within 20-30 minutes of us leaving my friend was VIOLENTLY sick for hours. This was the only place we had eaten for the day. It wasn’t a stomach bug or anything like that. It was a clear case of an allergic reaction to gluten for her.
With all of that in mind, would I come here again if I’m not with people that have allergies? Yes. The food I had was great. However, if you have allergies or sensitivities, I would be leery and mindful.
