A menu of ramen & small plates Japanese fare in a modern, rustic setting with a sake & shochu menu.

Waraku Japanese Restaurant, located in the Twinbrooke Shopping Center in Fairfax, offers a diverse menu featuring appetizers, Japanese skewers, sushi and sashimi, ramen, signature rolls, poke bowls, udon, bento boxes, and a variety of drinks. They are known for generous portions and reasonable prices for the food they serve. The service was slow, as only one person was serving and taking orders, but overall, it was okay. Sushi and sashimi for one person were large and could be shared between two, offering a generous selection, although nothing particularly stood out, even though they were fresh. The pork skewers were also large in portion, and the price was excellent, but the quality of the food didn’t meet expectations. If you are a big eater, this restaurant is definitely an excellent choice.

Ate here for the first time after a workout. I was the only person in the restaurant, but I was totally fine with that. The service was great and they were very nice. I ordered some shrimp tempura sushi, tonkatsu with rice, and the vegetables that came with it. It was an overall satisfying and peaceful dinner. Paid around $30 for the meal. The one thing I really liked was the napkin design with a small rose in the middle. Very artsy.

The fish and ingredients are very fresh. The restaurant has been open for 10 years and the prices are very favorable. It is a conscientious merchant with a very good experience,

My literal go to sushi spot EVERY TIME. They’ve always had the best quality My entire family has ordered from here for different occasions and picked up amazing food.
After reading another review, from my personal case, they staple the bags to make sure nothing falls otw home, and I’ve never missed a soup/salad on the side!

I’ve gotten take out from here in the past, and the food has been good, so I thought it was a good idea to stop in the other night.
I couldn’t have been more wrong. Table service is not their specialty. It took over 30 minutes to get sushi while we watched them fill multiple Uber Eats orders that sat there waiting on pickup.
So, by all means order delivery or takeout. The sushi is great! Just don’t repeat my mistake and treat this place like an eat in restaurant.

I really, really try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and I don’t think I’ve ever written a negative review in my life. I ordered through Postmates from this restaurant about a year ago, and the food I received was literally rancid. As in, you opened the container and it made you want to pass out, the smell was so bad. I was issued a full refund and given an apology at the time. I decided it must have been a fluke situation given this restaurant is still seemingly in business, and like I said, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I ordered from them again last night and had the exact same experience. I mean truly, the fish they used must have been three weeks beyond fresh. I attempted a bite of the tofu roll I ordered and gagged it into my sink. I had to bag it all up and drive it to a local dumpster, the smell was too horrifying to put it in my trash and wait to take out to the curb two days later. I scrolled through the reviews here, trying to figure out what on earth could possibly be happening, and the only explanation I can come up with is that they use different food depending whether you are being served in the restaurant or ordering from home. It sounds like a lot of people have gotten rancid food from them as takeout. It’s appalling, and absolutely disgusting.

I’ve order from this restaurant for years, and it’s usually fantastic, but I ordered delivery yesterday and couldn’t eat half of my food.
Miso soup was way saltier than usual, which would have been fine, however:
I bought the Chicken katsu bento box and the 3 roll lunch special, and the rolls in both were rancid.
Any rolls containing avocado were inedible because they used expire avocado. The California roll and shrimp tempura roll tasted sour and chemically. This may be a one off, but delivering rancid food is not excusable

Update from post Covid times! Feb 19, 2023! I ordered again from them (few times before, now yesterday) and feel I want to update the review, they’re amazing even with inflation the quality and portion size has been very fair. My favorite has always been salmon avocado hand roll or just plain salmon handroll (as I don’t like meat I try to eat more fish for protein) I ordered with extra salmon for each handroll—it’s about $5 more for each extra salmon for each roll, but I think it’s worth it. They gave such generous portions and the salmon looks so fresh and tastes so fresh. As long as you make it clear to them you want to order extra salmon each hand roll of salmon or salmon avocado roll so instead of about $6 it’s $11-12, they do give a very very substantial fair amount of salmon. Best for me is they’re fresh, and I don’t have to worry about upset stomach (some other restaurants the salmon looks pale pink and you can barely see the white stripes (means old) instead of the orange pink with white strips you can see clearly (see pics, very fresh). I highly recommend them if you have a sensitive stomach and want to be safe on the fresh salmon/fish side or you’re scared about eating raw fish because I’ve never had problems with them (I can speak for the salmon at least being so fresh, been to many restaurants or delivery orders, and waraku salmon looks and tastes VERY fresh, pink orange with clear white stripes), and their portions so generous as far as fish to rice ratio, esp if you get the extra salmon although the price goes from about $6 to $12 it’s worth it for each roll, esp if you want to catch up on proteins and don’t like eating red/pork meat like me. But, I would just make it VERY clear to the person taking orders you want extra salmon just about $5 more per roll (one time they didn’t understand me and just gave me regular rolls without the extra salmon that was paying about $12 for per roll, but I called and let them know and they gave me credit for next time, and next order they gave me extra rolls and a discount so i was impressed they remembered me and honored making it up for the order being wrong wrong last time. ) anyway extra salmon is a good option if you want/need protein in your diet esp if you want fresh fish, the extra salmon option—it’s not an option on Uber eats but it is if you call them or order through their website.

This sushi place has really fresh salmon avocado eel rolls, my go to is the salmon avocado hand roll. I always go to them for delivery when I want fresh sushi. You can see from the pics how fresh the sushi ingredients are. Generous large portions of salmon and avocado and seaweed salad. I highly recommend this place if you’re a sushi lover but also want to make sure your raw fish is fresh.

Great tasting food, cozy place, good quality (actually the best sushi I have had in over a year!), portions were more than enough, and look at this presentation!!!
UPDATE: During this isolation period, every weekend we need to treat ourselves for sanity, so we order from the best Japanese & Thai food in the area! They deliver promptly and the food is excellent quality! We used to go to the restaurant, but we eat at home these days. I miss the great service, smiling staff and hope we come back out soon!
