I visited the Waffle House in Smyrna, DE with my wife for a breakfast date a couple of weeks ago. The customer service was genuinely good—the staff was professional, friendly, and attentive throughout our visit. Their hospitality was one of the stronger points of the experience.
However, the temperature inside the restaurant was extremely cold, to the point of being uncomfortable. It made it difficult to relax and enjoy the meal.
The first waffle that arrived at our table was noticeably undercooked, with a doughy texture that suggested the batter hadn’t fully cooked through. The portion size was also surprisingly small, which was unexpected for a place that brands itself as the “Waffle House.” To their credit, the staff promptly prepared a fresh batch, and the replacement waffle was cooked properly. Still, given the restaurant’s name and reputation, I expected their signature item to be consistently excellent from the start.
In comparison, the Smyrna Diner—just a short walk away—offers significantly better waffles and a wider variety of breakfast options overall.
For these reasons, I feel that a 3‑star rating is fair. The service was solid, but the food quality and comfort level of the dining environment left room for improvement.

We stopped here on our way to a doctor appointment. Mehrad was our server and was excellent! This place was sooo much better than the camden location that was dirty and made my husband sick. This location was spotless, the people ALL greeted us when we came in and made us feel welcome c to be there instead of a nuisance. I would gladly drive an hour for this type of service. We’ll done staff! The other locations could learn a lot from you.

Honestly if I could give it no star at all I would. Let’s start with its super small, dirty and overcrowded. My partner and I stopped by for a quick breakfast, we were sadly disappointed by the service and the food. Our bacon was crispy and black waffles came out after my sides. My cup was filthy dirty to the point I had to let them know I would rather a to go cup because it’s no way my cup should be so dirty. The waiter wasn’t attentive at all, the manger acted as if I was bothering him asking for a different cup. The manger was couching not covering his mouth then back to writing on a notepad. One waiter bit her nail spit it out then took the man order. I thought I was on a Tubi movie because it was literally too much going on to process. Maybe I pay too much attention but it’s a never again for us.

I stopped in for a quick bite before getting my oil changed close by. I had just about an hour and my first thought was that I was probably going to be late getting back to the shop. However, the service and server was on point. Minutes upon sitting down, the server brought me coffee, took my order and just a few minutes later my food was in front of me piping hot . I’m not a huge Waffle House fan, but I would definitely recommend this particular one. Food came out exactly as ordered and hot.

On a Positive Note: The food is cheap and the service was fast.
Many dirty tables. I had to make a request for the table to be cleaned. I didn’t understand why there were menus on the table when it clearly was not cleaned properly. On our second day here, the coffee cup was once again, stained inside. I assume it was a coffee stain. Perhaps they should try bleaching the inside of their coffee mugs from time to time. It is worth noting that I always request my coffee in a Togo cup. Nonetheless, the waitress was nice and attentive to us but not so much to the dirty tables.
The Verdict: The food was your typical Waffle House breakfast. It is worth $12 if you can deal with the not so sanitary conditions of the dirty floor and table. There were no visible roaches. ♀️ I don’t have access to a Waffle House in my state so I dined here two days in a row. (5/23 and 5/24) I always look forward to a Waffle House when I travel south.

Waffle House is gonna Waffle House. It’s greasy, it’s comforting, and it’s exactly what you need at 10 a.m. after a questionable night out. Grits with Kraft cheese? Yes. Chocolate chip waffle? Absolutely. The coffee’s hot, the prices are low, and I’m not proud… but I will be back.
