I was searching on YouTube for the best black owned restaurants to dine at. This spot was noted on several lists! I immediately went online and made a reservation.
My reservation was for 2 on a Sunday at 7:30pm. We arrived around 7:10pm and we were greeted and seated by the owner. Our wait staff approached our table within minutes of us sitting down. He had a great personality and was engaging.
After talking with several wait staff about what they enjoyed on the menu we opted to start with the French onion soup, crab cakes and Escargot. The French onion soup is the best French onion soup I have ever tasted. The cheese was rich, the broth was flavorful and the onions cooked to perfection! If you only order one item this is the item to try! The crab cakes would be my second favorite of the starters. I will say that they look nothing like the crab cake dish featured on the menu on the website. The escargot was a little salty. It was good. I will admit that I had the most amazing escargot at a restaurant in NY that I now compare all escargot to! Unfortunately this one has nothing on that dish.
For the entrees:
I opted for the Dick dish. Website description is as follows: “Confit Duck quarter served with mushroom bread pudding and asparagus topped with fresh oranges and ginger sauce | Willakenzie Pinot Noir.”
The bread pudding was different but tasty! The asparagus were a little over cooked for me. However, I understand that people have different preferences. I like for my asparagus to still have a little crunch. The duck has great flavor!
My friend ordered the pork chop dish. Website description is as follows: “12 oz bone pork chop, corn bread stuffed with local andouille sausage grilled to perfection served with orzo pasta, ground beef, and fresh herbs and veggies, finished with pepper jelly | Willakenzie Pinot Noir.”
My friend enjoyed the dish. I tried the orzo pasta and would order it as a side item if it were an option!
Concerning the ambience, this place is stunning! It really makes you feel like you have left the city and been transported to a cafe in Paris! I could spend hours just soaking in the ambiance.
One additional thing to note : when your entree is served you get the chance to pick your own knife from a collection . I think this is a great way to add something extra special to the dining experience!
Overall, this spot is aWINNER! It checks all the box’s: great food, service, ambiance – and the prices are not too bad!! If you get an opportunity to check this spot out, I don’t think you will be disappointed!
I loved everything about my meal and will definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!
Bonus: enjoying the hospitality and food at Vyoone’s also means you are supporting a Canadian-French African-American Cherokee-Indian woman-owned small business. Do yourself a favor while in NO and seek out the smaller spots that might not have the more recognizable names – you won’t regret it.
