If you’re looking for an authentic taste of St. Louis’ historic Hill neighborhood, Vitale’s Bakery is an absolute essential stop. From the moment you walk through the door, the aroma tells you exactly where you are: a community staple that honors tradition.
The Highlights
• The Cannolis: These are the undisputed stars of the show. The shells are perfectly crisp—none of that sogginess you find at lesser shops—and the ricotta filling is smooth, creamy, and just the right level of sweet. Getting them fresh makes all the difference; they taste like they were piped just for you.
• The Variety: It is nearly impossible to leave with just one thing. Their display cases are a mosaic of Italian heritage, featuring everything from buttery biscotti and colorful rainbow cookies to decadent cakes and specialty pastries. Whether you want a light almond treat or a rich chocolate fix, they have the range.
• The Atmosphere: Visiting Vitale’s captures that unique “Hill” energy—friendly, bustling, and deeply rooted in Italian-American culture.
The Verdict
Vitale’s doesn’t just sell baked goods; they sell a piece of the neighborhood’s soul. It is the perfect place to grab a box of treats for a Sunday dinner or just to treat yourself while walking the neighborhood. If you have a sweet tooth and appreciate old-school quality, this is your paradise.

Before you walk into this old school Italian Bakery (located on the hill off Marconi) bakery take a second to make sure your shoes are tied on tight, you might even want to double knot them because the cream horns and the ricotta puffs will knock your socks clean off.
They charge by weight and by the cost vs the amount you receive it is quite affordable. People are friendly, helpful, (they do sell out so get there early) it’s old school done right.
They have frozen pizza shells, noodles, raviolis, sauce / gravy, canolis, and other items to grab so you can actually get stuff for your dinner here too.
Pro Tip: Buy extra they are fresh so they are good the next morning as well.

Vitale’s Bakery in The Hill district – It has been my history that whenever in a new city, find the cookies and the chocolate. I’m attending a conference and first visit to St Louis. I have a counterpart with the same goal: cookies and chocolate. We easily corrupted two more peers to seek the goods. I discovered Vitale’s walking the Hill. I’m an ant, I scout, then bring back the other ants. Vitale’s did not dissapoint. First, the staff are great and engaging, and they were patient, to the point they readily viewed my photos of my bread and cookies I make. Lots of great choices on the cookie front (bread, pastas, cheese and more). The cookies are good and we left with several pounds. I recommend a visit.

Even if you don’t watch King of the Hill, you can still visit the king of The Hill’s dessert scene: right here at Vitale’s
What makes them the king you ask? The cookies were good, but the cakes were absolutely magical. The German chocolate cake I had here was so much better than the German chocolate cake I had from a German bakery earlier this week, it was like putting prime Albert Pujols in a batting competition vs your run-of-the-mill high school JV baseball player.
And when I took my first bite into the Tartufo, I saw hallucinations of an Italian flag and I began singing the Italian national anthem in the middle of the store, even though I don’t know a lick of Italian.
But buyers beware: these cakes are fit for a king. They’re extremely rich, just like any king would be. Don’t let that scare you away completely, as they have fruitier options which I didn’t try which are likely a little less decadent.

I traveled to St. Louis for a birthday party and ordered a tiramisu cake from Angie. We dropped it off at a restaurant where we were to have dinner the next day and then those plans were changed due to foreseen circumstances. We moved the cake to our hotel downtown and had a wonderful sunset birthday party. It was the most fluffy and light cake I have ever ate and most are so rich you can barely have but a small piece, we were able to eat almost The entire cake but saved a few pieces for coffee in the morning. Not only was it the most family oriented birthday, but also Angie was like speaking with my own grandmother. She told me exactly what to do with the cake and how to save it. If there is any left, there was not. I will be visiting these sweet people every time I pass to St. Louis for the rest of my life. And more than likely, I will eat a whole cake. Love yall …….Sammy Luv
