VIRUNDHU INDIAN FEAST – Indian restaurant in Delaware County …
Reviews
Pros: there were a few but not many
– kind servers
– no wait time to get seated and were helped immediately
Cons: there were many
– the gobi Manchurian tasted rubbery and not crispy. One or two pieces were barely warm. My husband’s best guess is that it was frozen or made earlier in the day to then be microwaved later. That meant the cauliflower pieces no longer had the delicious crunch
– the parotta didn’t taste that flaky. It was probably the best item we ate though
– my husband said the mango lassi was too sweet
– my husband’s chicken kotu parotta was super off. He said it lacked spices that made it all feel once dish — and felt like the chicken wasn’t cooked in with the parotta because it tasted as if it was from a separate entree. We were expecting sliced red onions on top and a slice of lemon too—it makes the meal complete and helps with the flavor too
– the biggest disappointment was my vegetable chettinadu. It definitely felt as if there were frozen vegetables in there, as we found broccoli and crinkle cut squash in it. Previously frozen veggies have a characteristic texture you can’t miss. This dish deserves fresh vegetables.
I share this all to set them up for success because hopefully these weaknesses will be addressed. They need a new chef — period. We sincerely hope the management addresses these issues otherwise I am worried not many people will want to come back.
I WOULD NOT COME HERE for a take out order!!!!
In response to your request for additional information…
My main complaint is the wait time for orders that are being picked up by drivers and customers alike.
I have seen the staff do very well, and people who are picking up their orders don’t have to wait more than ten minutes.
There are particular staff members that I have seen cause drivers and customers alike to wait as long as forty minutes to pick up an order that was placed on the phone or the web. I have seen several customers leave in frustration.
With only 1 or 2 tables in the restaurant being occupied at the time, why are orders not being prepared prior to the pick-up time that is told to the customers? Why are orders not started until the customer arrives to pick the order up?
The restaurant inside is really nice, and the staff from the host to the servers are all very nice and accommodating. I know I like Indian food, but my experience has been pretty limited to the safe “white guy” Indian food that we always try when we’re too intimidated to order unfamiliar dishes. You know what I mean – tikka masala from Trader Joe’s and garlic naan.
I wanted to branch out and experience more of the cuisine, so I asked the super nice waiter if he could make some recommendations and he put a lot of thought into it, asked some questions about what I like and recommended two appetizers I didn’t catch the name of (one a spicy mutton dish, the other a delicious and savory chicken dish), a dhosa and the chicken biryani.
I can’t speak to authenticity, but I can say not only did I find a favorite Indian restaurant, but I found a top 5 favorite restaurant period.
I’ll definitely be a regular here, and I recommend if you even like Indian food a little bit you should go out of your way to check out Virundhu!
Space:
Very spacious , bright ambience , nice setup, easily accessible from 202, ample car parking.
Ordering food:
We talked to restaurent on Saturday night 8pm over phone and planned to visit this restaurent on our way from long distance and we were estimated to arrive around 9.30 and placed an order for our dine to avoid waiting time if there is any and don’t want the staff to wait on weekends above their working hours (10pm). Last order cutoff time was 9.30.
Staffs:
Staffs are very friendly (I mean it), attentive , very welcoming. This is our first visit and we were 8 adults and 3 kids. Staff made the tables ready with our food ordered over the phone and we reached 9.40 pm and food was perfectly timed in our table (kudos to serving team and chef). Restaurent is run by group of friends and family and felt very close to community. While we were their food came in order(starters, appetizers) and quickly since we ordered and gave enough time too to reach. Though it is late order and staffs were all filled with smile without any hesitation or tiredness in their face. Crowd was decent on the time of arrival(many of them were mostly done with their food and ready to wrap)
Food:
Placed an order for ambur mutton biriyani , chicken biriyani , chicken Kothu parotta, chicken 65, fish 65, idly , meen pozhichathu, mutton sukka, kodi veppudu.
All the above items are very delicious , rightly spiced (not very hot or low ), rightly salted. Rices and meats were all well cooked and aromatic. Staffs were accommodative without any hesitation for additional sides we asked. So their friendly service is applaudable. Portion on most of the food is very very good and biriyani single order is enough for 2 people.
Drinks /Desserts:
We asked for hot milk (not sure it is in their menu) but she managed to get us the hot milk though chefs were already left for the day.
We had mango lassi, rose milk. It was in fridge and we were served the drinks. Sweetness on lassi is ok , but in rose milk personally I felt little high on sweetness and bad part is both the drinks had bit high on Elachi(cardamom). We could really felt some chunks of cardamom on lassi and I had to put a bit of spicy food to offset the sweetness. We gave our feedback on spot and wanted to give right feedback to improve on all aspect and hope they take it in right way. Due to our feedback we were provided with free nannari surpath (good) to taste and good gesture from owners.
Billing:
Here is the part I was surprised (but did not reduce my star though believing this will not directly impact the taste of food and dining experience and expect this will not happen again). We were presented with bill and food prices are rightly priced vs quantity. Friend in our group was new to dining and he was paying the bill. While he swiped the card he was told to put default 20% tip apart from 18% gratitude added in the bill. We came to know this later and everyone on our group got surprised. We definitely liked their service and would have happily gave the tip unless we were asked to put. But still we are ok for this trip due to the positive experience we had. As on other review mentioned we were not charged for any sides.
Overall Experience:
Food tasted authentic , very tasty , nice ambience , very friendly staff, attentive , refreshing looks. I will definitely recommend this anyone who wants to taste an authentic sound Indian food. I know service industry is going through staff crunch with all this in mind I would rate 10/10 for our experience except the last part on billing. All the best for this place.

I don’t know what these Karens are talking about. I thought the service was great. The wait staff is super nice and learned our names after only a few visits. They’re VERY welcoming and patient when we’re parsing through unfamiliar items etc. I’ve also met the manager / owner and it’s clear she cares so much about what she does.
The atmosphere is also awesome. Nice classics that aren’t too loud so you can hear each other speak but do create a nice environment.
