Virtue is a gem, and our recent dinner there with a group of five was a masterclass in hospitality.
I had intended to book a table six weeks in advance, but upon arrival, realized my reservation hadn’t actually gone through (no email, no charge—purely my oversight). Despite the restaurant being packed, the hostess saw my predicament and incredibly managed to bail me out by finding us a table. That kind of grace under pressure is rare and set the tone for a perfect evening.
The experience only got better from there:
– The Service: Our server, Raj, was A-class. He provided expert advice on the menu and pairings that made a real difference in our meal.
– The Food: From the cocktails and appetizers to the entrées and desserts, everything was wonderful. It’s soulful, refined, and lives up to every bit of its reputation.
– The Vibe: It was the perfect backdrop for great conversation among friends.
So, if you’re looking for a spot in Hyde Park that treats you like family while serving world-class cuisine, this is it. We are very grateful for the gesture that saved our night. Highly recommend!
The food at Virtue really blew me away. It has that fine dining presentation with a home cooking palate of flavors. I usually highlight a few dishes, but each and every thing we had was wonderful.
Starting with the gumbo was the perfect way to defrost from the bitter cold. Our appetizer spread of greens, mac, and cornbread was like the Three Wise Men delivering heavenly gifts to our table. The cheesy balance of the mac, the smoked, juicy flavor of the greens, and the cornbread’s mouthwatering honeybutter bites.
The short rib was so tender and succulent, each piece gliding off the knife. And each scallop was packed with so much flavor.
And the one-two combo of millie’s puddin’ (banana pudding) and the cinnamon apple bread pudding was the ultimate knockout. I can honestly say they were some of the best desserts I’ve ever had.
Not a single morsel was left on our plates! I can’t sing my praises high enough. Virtue was next level. They really put the soul in soul food.
Lastly, the cinnamon apple bread pudding was an amazing wrap up to our dinner. I would definitely recommend Virtue.
Happy hour and Restaurant Week at Virtue was an absolute success. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm, polished, and inviting—perfect for unwinding or celebrating something special.
The happy hour offerings were thoughtfully curated, with well-balanced cocktails and small plates that delivered big flavor. During Restaurant Week, the menu truly showcased Virtue’s Southern-inspired cuisine—beautifully plated, deeply flavorful, and clearly crafted with intention and care. Each course felt elevated yet comforting, a true reflection of the restaurant’s soul.
Service was attentive, knowledgeable, and welcoming without ever feeling rushed. Virtue continues to set the standard for dining in Hyde Park—consistently excellent food, impeccable service, and a memorable experience. Hate no one told me they had coat check, but next time! A guest eye sat beside informed me.
Highly recommend for happy hour, special menus, or anytime you want a top-tier Chicago dining experience. ️✨
drinks did take a very long time to come out, almost 30 minutes, so that was a little frustrating but food was so delicious. my favorite was probably the mac n cheese or the chicken. everything had so much flavor, was so fresh, and definitely gave that home cooking vibe.
the ice cream (not pictured) that i got for a birthday dessert was completely melted, but our server did kindly get us another one. unfortunately that one didn’t taste very good either, but everything else was 10/10.
highly recommend!
Virtue Restaurant exceeded every expectation from start to finish. I ordered an espresso martini, and it was made perfectly—complete with the three espresso beans I require, which immediately set the tone for the level of detail and care they put into everything.
For appetizers, we enjoyed the fried green tomatoes, gumbo, collard greens cornbread, and mac & cheese. Each dish was flavorful, comforting, and beautifully prepared. Every bite reflected the soul and creativity behind the menu.
For the main course, I had the half chicken served with sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts, which was cooked to perfection and incredibly satisfying. The other party ordered the braised short ribs, and they were just as impressive, tender, rich, and full of flavor.
The service truly deserves special recognition. Raj provided immaculate, five-star service—very attentive, warm, and professional. The entire staff was exceptional. When I accidentally dropped my napkin, it was immediately picked up and replaced without hesitation. Empty plates and glasses were cleared promptly, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience without interruption.
The menu is diverse, the crowd was equally diverse, and the overall environment was welcoming and vibrant. Virtue offers not just a meal, but a top-tier dining experience.
Highly recommend—this is Chicago dining at its finest. ️✨
