We got to chat with the owner who told us a little about the place and where in Italy he was from. Super nice. You could tell that quality is important to him. When he took a pie out of the oven the crust was a little too dark for his standards so he actually offered free slices to us folks eating inside. Personally I like my crusts crunchy so I was happy.
I got the grandma slice and it was delicious. Definitely would to back.
I’m always a little leery of this area that tends to cater to the tourist demographic (which was alive and thriving when I arrived – an out-of-towner father of two gleefully purchased a $1 ranch side and practically shouted his thank yous as he walked away from the counter), but this place is a bit under the radar given where it is, and ultimately provides a quality slice.
I stumbled across Village Square a few days ago after almost getting lost in that horrendous hellscape known as the holiday markets over by Herald Square. Given that it’s literally a half block from Macy’s, it’s stunning how subtle the location is – it’s tucked away between a few other nondescript businesses and could easily be overlooked if you didn’t notice the signage. When I came back to try Village Square for lunch, it was pretty empty, save the aforementioned tourists and a few people waiting for pickup orders. There’s only a few stools and metal countertops along the walls, so it’s not the most comfortable eatery to spend your lunch in, but it is what it is.
Honestly, pizza optics are important to me and I thought the tomato sauce-based slices looked a little sketchy. The vodka square slices were an easy pick and remain one of the most underrated options on any pizzeria menu. There is a chicken parm vodka slice at Krispy Pizza in JC I stil think about from time to time. Anyway. This wasn’t bad, but would have been dramatically improved if I’d eaten it at room temperature. I’m not crazy about reheated slices anyway, as dried up sauce and cheese don’t exactly get me hot and bothered, but it’s especially true for vodka slices, which need the moistness to work. In this case, the guy at the counter got a little distracted from some other orders so my slices were in there probably a minute or two longer than they should have been, and the quality suffered as a result. The potential is there though. It’s a nice, crisp crust and I’d give this another shot if I remember to give them instructions to forego the additional oven trip.
Beyond the overheating, the service was totally fine. Very personable fellow manning the register who was clearly handling a ton of orders on his end. I was in and out of there pretty quickly. The price point…eh. It is what it is. Vodka slices are going to have specialty pricing, and coupled with the area of NYC you’re in, this is going to set you back about $11 or $12. I’ve seen worse, but welcome to holiday season in 2025. One of the better and sadly cheaper options in the neighborhood. Ho ho ho.
Pizza is bomb! Must try Vodka slice and I am going back for sure.
The classic, margarita, and vodka square pizza were so delicious and not too expensive by the slice. Wanted to go back one last time before we left.
NYC long time resident but moved out a few years ago. I came back for a Knicks game at MSG and went to grab a slice before heading back to my hotel. Avoided the crappy dollar slices and gave this place a shot. PHENOMENAL pizza!! Between my family, we tried the pepperoni, the vodka and the grandma. I can’t explain how shocked and amazed I was to get a great slice of true NYC pizza in midtown. Not sure when I’ll be back to midtown but when I am, I’ll 100% be grabbing some pies from Village Square!
