Craving some authentic Chinese food during my SD trip yesterday and stumbled upon this place. So glad we did! The food is the real deal, Hunan cuisine. We got the spicy grilled fish, century egg eggplant, and the bullfrog. Every dish hit the spot and tastes just like home. Also shoutout to our server who was sweet and helped us figure out the spice levels and portions since it was our first time. Great service, amazing flavors. Highly recommend!

As soon as you walk into this place you know it is going to be an authentic Hunan Chinese food experience. We had the eggplant/century egg dish, mapo tofu and pork face/ear dish.
The wait staff was very nice and prompt. They checked on us multiple times and brought a fresh water pitcher with ice without us having to ask. One of the servers had a nice conversation with us about China and her experience here in San Diego. It was nice to chat about our respective cultures.
Everything was expertly prepared, fresh and high quality. My wife and I eat authentic Chinese cuisine almost exclusively these days (having been to most places in the convoy area), and this is definitely one of the best.
When you see something like Stinky Tofu on the menu, you know it’s going to be the real deal

This place is as authentic as it gets. None of the workers want anything to do with you which is how it is in real Chinese restaurants. Service is terrible and that is just fine because the food is AMAZING. This place is packed with Chinese people. I was the only American out of probably 60 people at 6:30 on a Thursday. Food was just as good as when I was in Changsha China. I spoke with the folks who work there and the owners are from Hunan so they are serving all local dishes.

Very good food! I had lunch at the Village Kitchen today for the first time and was amazed how good my meal was. I ordered a pork belly and bamboo shoots dish with a real depth of flavor. I could taste every ingredient layered together harmoniously. It was a traditionally spicy dish with manageable heat levels. I recommend everyone try this restaurant. I will certainly return.

The sour and Spicy shredded potato was just so-so. The flavor was plain. I would not recommend it. The Chicken intestines and hunan stir fried pork are really spicy. They are good along with white rice. BUT they are BOTH SALTY. Really salty. You have to drink lots of water. Many people have recommended this Chinese restaurant and they think this is the best Chinese restaurant in San Diego. If so, I would say maybe Chinese restaurants here are less competitive than I expected. Or maybe three dishes is a small sample size. We need to try more dishes to have a fair review

I had a really disappointing experience here. When we asked for something, we were told to go get it ourselves from the front counter near the kitchen. At that point I honestly wondered — are customers expected to serve themselves everything now? If that’s the case, should we also walk into the kitchen and scoop our own food? I left a 15% tip, which I believe is completely reasonable, especially considering the level of service we received.
After we paid, the server came back and asked why we “only” tipped that much, she said her boss ask her to do this, which was honestly shocking and extremely unprofessional.
Tipping is supposed to reflect the service. A server confronting customers about tips is inappropriate and made the whole experience uncomfortable.

New review- They’ve just introduced several exciting new items! One is the Hunan-style swamp eel, and the other is baby lotus. Both dishes are new to me and absolutely delicious. I’ve been a fan of this restaurant for a long time, and it never fails to impress. It remains one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in San Diego, known for its authentic flavors and excellent preparation. Although it can get quite busy in the evenings and on weekends, it’s worth finding the right time to enjoy a truly exceptional Chinese meal. The restaurant is clean and inviting, with comfortable seating. Highly recommended!

I ordered a chicken pork tripe Herb soup (猪肚鸡汤), a thousand years egg & eggplant & green pepper, and a spicy cumin pork ribs. They are all amazing. I think the chicken pork tripe Herb soup is really healing, it is very nutritious. I definitely recommend people who want to try authentic Hunan style Chinese people.

Yesterday I ordered some takeout. After I got home and finished eating, I had diarrhea—twice. I thought it might be because I caught a chill.
Today I reheated the leftovers from that takeout, and after eating them I had diarrhea twice again. This time I’m pretty sure it was the food—either the ingredients weren’t fresh or it wasn’t clean. That’ll definitely be the last time I eat there. So much for the reputation of Dongting xian—turns out the owner isn’t anything special after all. The illusion is officially gone.

However, today’s experience was extremely uncomfortable. The service was already lacking — for example, when we needed to pack leftovers, we were asked to go to the counter and get the to-go boxes ourselves.
Despite this, after already leaving a 15% tip, I was questioned during checkout about why the tip was “low,” and was told this was coming from the owner.
This felt like clear emotional pressure and guilt-tripping toward a customer. Tipping should be a voluntary reflection of service quality, not something customers are questioned or pressured about.
Even with decent food, this kind of service and behavior seriously detracts from the overall experience and makes me reconsider returning.
