Reviews
Yesterday we took someone who just moved to Vancouver from India. She was vegetarian and impressed with the food, but surprised how different it turned out from her expectation. She must look so shocked that it concerned Mr. Vij and he had to check with her in Hindi. It just showed how he cared about his customers and his food.
Mango Lassi was on the smaller size; I was just used to have it as big as a beer glass. It was flavourful with different spices in it. It tasted sophisticated, it was not bad but just not my cup of tea.
We had chaat salad, which looked like deep fried noodles. The staff mixed it well for us. It was full of flavour, texture and sauces. An interesting dish.
Lamb kebab was the highlight of the dinner for me. They had it in the form of a patty, which came in four pieces. The mint sauce that came with it was so thick and tasty! The environment was a bit too dark for taking pictures, so the photo could not do it justice for this delicious dish!
Paan was thoughtfully cut into smaller pieces, they looked like a mini pizza slices, which made it so much easier to handle.
We also had some rice with two other dishes: a jackfruit and a portobello. However, my little baby kept me so occupied that had no chances to take pictures.
Speaking of the baby, just a note to share with other parents. While the restaurant was relatively dim and relaxing, and the staff was very nice to my baby; for some reason, baby was not relaxed at all, which was rare when we went out. I had to carry baby and walk to the washroom and the bar a few times to calm him down. Once we walked out the dining area, he was happy; once we got back, he got fussy again. I wonder if the ceiling was relatively low, so it trapped all the noises that might be too simulating for infants, but not noticeable for adults. Nothing wrong with the restaurant, just an observation. We should have come at a less busy time of the day. We were sorry if baby annoyed our neighbours. Thank you for the staff and everyone who was patient with us.
The lamb was high-quality and flavorful, though the sauce was thin and yogurt-forward. The butter chicken was clean and organic, but too westernized for my taste. Samosa was the standout — crisp, well-spiced, and delicious. Rice pudding was light and satisfying. Cocktails were generous and well made.
Service was excellent — attentive staff and a manager who genuinely cares.
Price-wise, very reasonable. You’re getting a full dine-in experience in a beautiful space, with thoughtful food and great hospitality. In today’s world where a basic sandwich costs 10-20$, this felt like excellent value.
If you’re after bold, traditional flavors, this may not be it. But for a clean, upscale Indian meal — Vij’s stands out.
The owner Chef Vikram Vij personally welcomed us and the food is prepared fresh by an all women team.
For starters we had:
1. Vegetarian Spring Rolls
2. Paneer Momos
3. Crispy chicken with a special sauce
4. Jackfruit Sheekh Kebabs
Entrees:
1. Paneer Kofta curry with special Naans
2. Fish in a gravy
3. Lamb chops marinated for 19 hours in a special wine and fenugreek sauce.
4. Vegetables Biryani
Dessert:
Hot Gulab Jamun
Creamy Malai Kulfi with Rose petals
All ingredients used are local that are grown within the radius of 40 miles of the restaurant and the prices are great value for one.
Decor is nice and can take upto 190 persons.
Highly recommended if you are in Vancouver.
It was a weekend dinner and place was packed. Chef are nice and help out around the restaurant as well greeting us etc.
Service and atmosphere were great. Looks great for dating and casual dinner.
Food. I got recommendations from the very nice waitress and order the perfect portions for us
However, the taste or quality isn’t what I expected. Honestly I am not Indian and I am comparing to what I had tried around the globe on the taste. Seems not as tasty as I thought. The crackers are pretty much gonna expire taste
The chicken is too rough and touch. Spices is good by the way. Just one of them are too salty to me. The main is the goat curry with bread and rice. The curry isn’t the flavor I was looking at. Bread is a bit over toasted
Well, I can only say may be this is the taste of other parts of India as I know when I work in India that the taste and spices are different in different parts of the country.
So, that’s about it. I gave this as comparison to the other 2 Indian place I had in Vancouver which is in Granville street.
Thanks
