We were greeted warmly, and the staff were very attentive and kind throughout our meal.
I ordered a rare steak and meatball pho (fried egg added for an additional $2) and my partner ordered the all meat combination pho. Both of our broths were very flavorful by itself, but ofc it wouldn’t pho without all the veggies and the additional sauce condiments- which were nicely organized in a tray on the table.
I also ordered the grilled pork Bahn mi to share between myself and my partner, and all I can say is damn. It was AMAZING. So good in fact that before we left I ordered another to go.
The food was all together delicious, and I also ordered the Thai Tea Boba Jelly drink, and that was also really good. Thai tea tasted fresh and the soft jellies at the top was a fun addition. Came in a colorful plastic (reusable) cup that I got to take home and will use again.
All in all, a great experience. There were so many other things on the menu that looked amazing, so I will be back to try more (and for the pork bahn mi).
Thanks and cheers!
Beef bahn mi: delicious! I’m not sure if it’s true or not, but i heard that the bread is baked in house. Regardless, absolutely delicious! The bread is just slight flakey and toasty and holds all the fillings well. The fillings, pate, mayo, and bread ratio is on point! Additionally, the meat is so beautifully marinated and flavorful! Do not expect a bland experience if you get their bahn mi. I even had the regular meatloaf bahn mi, and that was as equally delicious. I didn’t snag a picture, but that is most definitely because it was that good. 5/5!
Bun bo hue: hmm… I have mixed feelings on this one unfortunately. First things first, it does taste good, but it really isn’t very spicy at all. If anything it is actually a little bit sweet. Flavors aside, another thing i liked was how clean they prepared the pork shank or hock (tbh idrk which exactly, but it was pork and there was a big boney center with pork skin and cartilage all around). I’ve had experiences from other locations where this pork shank still has a little of hair on it still, which is fine but I personally just dont prefer it. Anyways, Viet Town did a great job cleaning all the meat thoroughly and i appreciate that very much. Overall, there was a lot of care and attention paid to the broth. I provided a photo of a tiny shrimp they add to the broth as a base ingredient for flavor. One more note about the broth though, it is a little bit on the oilier side. I don’t mind it, but others may. The only thing that really disappointed me from this dish was the serving size of the noodles in comparison to the broth. There is plenty of broth in a serving size, but the amount of noodles i had to go with it were disproportionate. Imagine about 1/3 cup of Vermicelli noodles with about 6 cups of broth… Thankfully there were lots of cabbage and beanspouts to enjoy the broth with too, but for the price of nearly $20 for a bowl, that’s just not okay. Hopefully this was an odd event and not the common case with Viet Town, because it really is a milder, but tasty dish! 3/5.
Original review: I’ve had their viet town bahn mi now 2 times, and I am really surprised at how good it is. I’m really picky about the asian food in madison, which I feel alot could be better. But this place, Ive had the bahn mi at the restaurant and delivery now, and both times it blew my mind Madison has this. Crispy airy bread (something people dont tend to get right), and the perfect amount of pate, to meat, to vege’s ratio. I may have to say its the best bahn mi in madison right now. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills but I really think its that good. Only downside is its quite expensive.
And the drinks!! Their selection is incredibly diverse; I honestly want to try every single one. I’ll definitely remember to take photos next time I visit.
We had the Flank Pho which has a ton of noodles and our only complaint was that the meat was too fatty. The broth was delicious and it was a lot of food. We also had the R4 Shaking Beef with rice which was amazing and I would get it again in a heartbeat.
I am excited to come back and try some more options.
