When Veritas was first created in 2004, it was not a restaurant. The Stitt Family intended it to be a supplier of interesting culinary goods and experiences. But not a restaurant. The shop always provided wine tastings, cooking classes and events. But as time went on, preparing food became central to what Veritas was, especially after Mathis Stitt took over in the kitchen. Veritas is now a restaurant. One of only 18 included on every edition of the Post Dispatch’s annual list of Top 100 Restaurants in St. Louis. It’s a deeply loved, community focused, extraordinary, Casual Fine Dining Restaurant.
Open kitchen featuring fine New American eats & spirits in a relaxed setting, plus a wine store.

When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty. The man at the host stand seemed unsure what to do when I told him we had a reservation, he just told me to pick any table. No big deal, but it set the tone. It took several minutes before anyone brought us water or greeted us, and no one introduced themselves as our server.
Eventually, the same man from the host stand came by to take drink orders. While waiting, I noticed the décor was really nice, but also noticed two people who I assume were the owners sitting with laptops—and a dog in the dining room, which felt a little strange for a fine dining spot.
When our server finally came over, she didn’t introduce herself and seemed annoyed when we asked for more time to look over the menu. Meanwhile, I saw the owners warmly greeting every other table except ours. At one point, the woman (I assume one of the owners) brought food to us that wasn’t ours, got visibly frustrated, and walked off.
We eventually ordered the cornbread and salmon. The cornbread was fine. It’s sweet with a very salty bacon jam. My girlfriend liked it more than I did. The salmon was a decent portion but a bit dry, and the flavor combination didn’t really come together for me. Our drinks sat empty for most of the meal without anyone checking in, which was disappointing.
When we finished, I asked for the check and said “no rush,” but it still took about 15 minutes to get it.
Overall, the space itself is lovely, but the service and energy were off from start to finish. I really wanted to like it, but after giving it a second chance, I don’t think I’ll be back.
Small Plate #1: Arancini with BBQ Pork, Mushrooms, Cotija, Green Chili Sauce, and Farm Fresh Egg. While visually appealing, the dish was underseasoned and severely lacking flavor. I would’ve been happy to season it myself had there been salt & pepper on the table.
Small Plate #2: Crispy Cornbread with bacon jam, chives and honey thyme butter. The bacon jam was more bacon crumbles than jam and only 3 of 6 pieces had a small dollop of honey thyme butter. Meh.
Small Plate #3: Devils on Horseback – bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed, deep fried skewered prunes with peanuts and balsamic drizzle. This was by far the best of three small plates. But then again, you could bacon wrap a cricket, deep fry it and drizzle a good balsamic on it and it would probably taste good.
Main Course #1: Strip Steak with Cracked Purple Potatoes, Carrots, Butternut Squash, Turnips, Oregano and Pecans. Holy cow, the plate was covered in undercooked, underseasoned root veggies. Sadly, the steak, while cooked correctly, was 40% fat and gristle. Not worth the price.
Main Course #2: Mahi Mahi, Nut Crusted with Sweet Potato Bisque, Green Beans, Parsnips, Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Basil, Tarragon and Almonds…at least that’s what the menu said. As a wild mushroom forager, I assure you there wasn’t any hen of the woods in the dish. The Mahi Mahi was good but again, underseasoned.
When asked if I wanted dessert, I declined, not willing to take another chance just to be disappointed again.
PS… The vibe at Veritas stops abruptly once you walk past the warm front patio lights. Perhaps, upon drinking several glasses of wine, the vibe returns.
BOTTOM LINE: Veritas might be enjoyable to gather with friends over a few glasses of wine and deep friend prunes. Beyond that…head east on Clayton Rd for actual fine dining.
We went there for our anniversary and had an incredible dining experience! The food was not only delicious but excelled in both quality and quantity (hats off to the chef). We opted for the Thursday three-course option, and every dish exceeded our expectations.
To start, we had the goat cheese and eggplant dip with fried pita, which was perfectly balanced in flavor and texture, and a fantastic way to begin the meal and as an accompaniment for our cocktails.
Our cocktails were equally impressive—each one had multi layered flavor and were crafted with innovation and care.
For our main courses, the braised pork was tender and rich, while the steak frites were cooked to perfection. And to top it all off, the brownie with icecream was a decadent and satisfying dessert.
A special shoutout to our server, Jordan, who was incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. She made sure we were well-informed about the specials and helped enhance our dining experience with great recommendations.
The whole experience made our day and we can’t wait to return! Highly recommended.
The service was friendly and accomodating. The menu has something for everyone. We’ll definitely come back.
The food? Absolutely incredible. Every dish was beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor—our guests are still talking about it. The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and effortlessly elegant, creating the perfect backdrop for a truly special evening.
To the entire Veritas team: thank you. Thank you for welcoming us so graciously into your space and for providing an experience my family will never forget. You exceeded every expectation, and we are so grateful.
Devil on a horseback was a unique experience for my taste.
