We’ve been going here since it began. Although, we haven’t been here since it changed ownership. While they have updated the building and interior.
The food: The menu is still the same. That said, they now charge for chips (your choice of flour or corn). The salsa isn’t really salsa. It’s some crushed tomatoes with little to no flavor. If you don’t eat anywhere else you won’t be that disappointed. Since I am a pescatarian, they have only a few items on the menu that you can get. While as a party of three, we didn’t take long to order. The refried beans were basic. They tasted like they’re from a can. The rice was passable, as long as you don’t go anywhere else. The sour cream comes in a packet. The condiments (pico de gio and guacamole) are in disposable cups. Great if you’re ordering to go, not so much if you’re doing a dine-in.
The service: This is one of the few things they did above average. Our drink order was filled very quickly. It would be the same throughout the meal. Not the most friendliest, but she checked the boxes.
The atmosphere: So, they did some major upgrades. Freshening the look (yes, it’s been years, but it is new to us). The decor fits well. What pulls it down is that they have booths that are for two people. If they’re busy, you may find yourself in a small booth. Add in our 2 year old grandson, and limited space means you have to watch your elbows while eating.
Overall, they have some areas of opportunity. They would do well to go see what their competition are doing. The Mexican cuisine scene in our area is very high. Having a large Latino presence means average doesn’t work anymore.

If you like dry ground beef with a little bit of Mexican seasoning in it, then this is the place for you. The portions are big and the prices are decent.

The food was terrible. The only good thing was the canned pop and chips and cheese dip. The salsa was disgusting. If I could give a negative rating I would.

The most unique item was their puffed corn chips as a side. I love everything…a great mexican restaurant.

If blandness is your flavor of choice, this place is for you. If margaritas made from one of those syrupy mixes sounds good, this place is for you. If low cost is more important to you than good food, this place is for you. When Taco John’s and Taco Bell are better choices, you know this cannot be good. This place makes me fantasize about opening my own restaurant next door and putting Ft Madison out of it’s food misery.

We were looking forward to our dinner here, but honestly it felt like dinner straight out of the frozen food aisle. The ‘salsa’ was basically tomato juice cosplaying as salsa — complete with a spoon so you could drink it, I guess? The chips were not complimentary (yes, you pay extra for dipping into the tomato juice). The menu was extremely limited, so it was difficult to find anything appealing.

The chicken tasted processed and “pressed” like it came from a factory mold, and the rice was so mushy/blended it could’ve doubled as baby food. At one point I wondered if I was just eating a glorified TV dinner on a plate.

Oh and don’t forget to ask for the $1 dollop of daisy sour cream. Literally, not even joking.

The waitress was kind (no complaints there), but the food and pricing were rough. If you’re craving authentic Mexican, this ain’t it.

Food was bland. Ordered a chicken and rice dish. Not much flavor. Service was good. Very prompt and happy. Price was pretty decent. Salsa was more like pureed tomatoes than salsa.

A wonderful Midwest tex-mex restaurant that is not authentic but with good home cooked deliciousness. I had the soft taco plate. Three deep fried flour tacos with rice and beans. It was more than filling with fresh delicious toppings. The ground beef was a bit plain but overall was very good. The fried flour chips were a welcome change from the usual corn chips. The staff was very pleasant and there was little wait for our food. Overall a wonderful place to have lunch.

Definitely not as good as it used to be. None of it made any of the 25 people in our party wish to come back again. The server we had did well, but hopefully he is able to move employment elsewhere as Amigos has only gone down hill over the years. The margaritas were tasty but very small for the price.
