I visited because I heard the fish fry was famous.
It seems to be a very famous restaurant that was even featured on German TV.
The host also said it was delicious.
I tried to make a reservation a few days in advance, but they said one person could come without a reservation, so I went during lunchtime on a weekday.
As expected, there was a line, and I waited about 20-30 minutes before I was seated. It seemed like the other person was sharing a table.
I ordered a medium-sized fish fry, potato salad, cucumber salad, and French fries.
It was a lot for one person, but I enjoyed it all.
I especially recommend sharing the cucumber salad.
I think it was worth the wait.
Also, the restaurant’s information says it’s closed from December 13th to January 4th.
Please check the restaurant’s hours before you visit.

Really peculiar and typical restaurant/bistro from the cultural traditions of Hamburg. The place is really cute & makes you feel going back into the past. Only problem is that everything you order is COMPLETELY FRIED, and the smell is strong, so even if is a fish restaurant, isn’t not really advisable to go eat good fish dishes, it’s more like for taking some snack like fish & chips! The service, is more like a bistro and not like a restaurant.

I had to walk 15 minutes to this restaurant. When I arrived there was a queue outside. I waited extra 5 minutes there too. But my experience totally worthed them all.
It is a small cozy place with rustic furniture. It is usually crowded. You better book a table before you go.
Service employee were so kind and professional. Meal served fast enough.
I chose ‘kleine’ portion, but it was already fulfilling enough. Fish were crunchy outside and juicy inside. It was unbelievably DELICIOUS!!
They serve home made sauces, I had mayo and it was well balanced and delicious as well.
Thank you all the staff for perfect experience. From now on restaurant is my only favourite for fish and chips

Was very excited to try after all the reviews and I knew I stumbled upon a star when it’s filled with locals. Restaurant was full but had outdoor/garden tables and braced the heat cos I really wanted to eat. It was so good I wished I didn’t had breakfast. Must try if you’re in Hamburg!

Great fish & chips. I had the “small” portion with 5 pieces of fish. Cooked to perfection with really good chips. All reasonably priced too. I can see why this place is so popular.

I heard a lot about this fish restaurant in Hamburg and I can tell you it’s not a fishy story! It’s a wonderful gem of a place historic in many ways and I believe they’ve been making the best fried fish since 1938. I went there on a Friday and Friday has to be the busiest day for fish it’s a religious tradition amongst others there’s a queue, a long queue but it’s worth it. Inside you have table service outside it’s self service the choices are just right if you come for anything apart from fried fish don’t bother because they do only the best fried fish in Germany! Try it with fries or traditionally served with potato salad tasty.. it’s a dream! Friendly service no frills authentic interior if you like fried fish you’ll love it here.

Wait to get in, about 15 minutes. Wait for the food after ordering, about 30 minutes. But very well worth it. The best baked fish I’ve had in many years. Don’t expect 5 star service, but expect a unique experience in a cozy but crowded place. You may have to sit with strangers, just try to make new friends.

Absolutely legendary spot in Hamburg! The fish is as fresh and tasty as it gets – simple, no frills, just perfect. The atmosphere is super down-to-earth, the kind of place where everyone feels welcome. Funniest part: you’ll see cops and gangsters sitting side by side, forgetting all differences because the fish is just that good. A true Hamburg institution – come hungry!

A hidden gem! Veddeler Fischgaststätte may be small, but they serve fresh, flavorful fish dishes that hit the spot every time. The portions are generous, the quality is top-notch, and the staff is friendly. Perfect for a quick lunch or a casual meal by the water. Don’t miss their fish sandwiches and daily specials—always a treat!
A must-try for seafood lovers!
