Subterranean South Broadway HiFi Bar Debuts Today
Reviews
The craft cocktail menu lauds a lot of elements like chamberyzette, aveze gentian, dubonnet, bigallet, park pineau des charentes, gooseberry cordial, and other fancy-sounding elements — but I felt like the cocktails tasted simple and not at all as refined as the ones upstairs. I think the highlight down here is supposed to be the “vintage” cognacs, madeiras, and other spirits — but then you’re looking at $25-45 a pour or more.
The food menu here is limited, but good for a bar — featuring some elements from Le Foret upstairs and some unique ones. Think charcuterie, tinned fish, escargot, mushroom pate, duck rillette, and frog legs. The duck rillette was our favorite, but obviously hard if you’re gluten-free. I also tried the escargot and frog legs (both of which I’ve had plenty of times other places) and found both to be super bland. I would probably recommend the charcuterie or tinned fish as a dependable option.
The whole HiFi AudioBar element that’s so trendy right now… I don’t know… there are a few nice speakers and a single record player behind the bar. Compare that to ESP with huge turntables being the center element of the bar and a whole wall of records. Or even Peach Crease with a vinyl DJ spinning at his booth in the back and ENORMOUS speakers placed throughout the space. I just don’t really see it.
I came here opening week, so perhaps some adjustments still to be made… but that was my honest opinion. I’d probably come sit at the bar upstairs instead.
